Welms are small creatures that battle for food and territory with East Coast birds for Ilex Verticillata (aka Winterberries). If you hear a cardinal, robin, or cedar waxwing outside squawking louder than normal, keep an eye open for a welm.

Welms take advantage of storms and other rainy conditions to gather resources for their nests while birds are resting in trees. Once skies are clear, Welms that are threatened will hide in puddles where they will dissolve their forms until it is safe to leave.

This welm was found in Harrisonburg, Virginia gathering berries as a sky clears up. It most likely will not make it back to its nest before birds attack.
