LOVE (Phase 2, Chapt 7)

“Only as much as I can help it.” I could grow to love this. It was different, so different from the flight with Tabh, the flight with Lap. Oresk’s feathers were sleek and stiff, but I could get my hands under them, to the warmth of her skin. The wingbeats were constant, and I would probably have bruises on stiff legs from the occasional battering… but I think I’d manage.

CURL (Phase 1, Chapt 25)

“I don’t want to take the chance.” I tilted my head to the ceiling, wondering if I could hear anything. Just murmuring.

“Steroy doesn’t have your name.”

“No, but he knows what I look like. And a nomesach isn’t the best for keeping hidden.”

“Sorry.”

“Not your fault. Next time I’ll not think about rescuing everyone I might be able to.”

Krinos curled up beside me. “Don’t blame yourself.”

The murmurings became sharper, louder. Angrier.

RING (Phase 3, Chapt 11)

Siren nodded, smiling. “That’s great! We’ll have to ask, of course, but they won’t mind. Especially if you can play.” She gestured at the flute in my hand.

“Nothing like so well as you were singing.”

She splayed her hands, rings glinting. “I have had a lot of practice.”

“And they have a lot of food cooking.” Krinos thwacked her tail against my chest. “Can we go get some?”

I raised an eyebrow. “Hungry, are we?”

BLANKET (Phase 3, Chapt 3)

There was a click and I tore my gaze from the window to see Mélisandé put down the plate I hadn’t even noticed her carrying.

“I suppose you’ll want to finish this.”

“It’s probably cold.” I made no move towards it, though it was right beside me.

“I trust there will be no more distractions?”

“I’ve certainly none planned.” I stretched out my toes, catching at the blanket on my bed. “But I don’t know that there’s more to say.”

“Is music really that important to you?”

Last Line Tag #18

Hey! This one’s from @zmlorenz and now that I’ve done some writing worthy of the name we’re here!

 “All I’m asking is your name,” it said. “And then maybe I’ll be gone.”

 “Maybe doesn’t sound certain enough.” I knew I should stop replying, but if it was going to follow... I had to keep it friendly. Had to hope it wouldn’t take offence and spirit me away somewhere.

 “There’s a chance - a slight chance - that you’re the one I’ve been sent for.”

 I may be rewriting the beginning of WCC again. Hopefully to be a bit more... sensible? Or something.

 Aaand hopefully I’ll get further than the last rewrite. Or join up with it or something lmao

Happy Storyteller Saturday! Tell me a little about your MCs family, found or otherwise.

Hey, Happy Storyteller Saturday!

so there are. a few? found families in my stuff? of course there is lmao

but we're gonna go with the OG one bc sometimes you just gotta go back to the roots, you know?

So it's werecreature chronicles time and at the heart of this we have Leiri, stubborn older teen (I think 16 originally but my god that has changed) who wants nothing more than to get home, and is therefore travelling around picking up other people who have also been landed in this world and would like to go home and she reckons she's gonna do it by like. sheer force of will or something. who knows.

Anyway yeah plot happens, they don't get home. They make a home! They become a family! The real home was the friends we made along the way!

so we have;

Leiri, accidental leader, would much rather be chilling with her flute but instead has to liais with the govt/monarchy for their jobs. She's mad about that but fine. Still awkward, will turn into a leopard at her problems

Melisande, the level headed one, better with her words and caring. finds home most easily in dance, didn't really want to give up the one she'd found in favour of this one, but this one is good too

S'ray, delighted to have people who get them and sigh at their puns and to be the cool adult for the kids. Excellent mimicry of a rubber duck for all your problems

Fin, literal child, god he's so hyped to have so many family members who can turn into animals around him. He's going to wear you out with his sheer amount of energy and everyone would die for him. He would like you all to live

Orith, the pretty boy. Dating Melisande, vying with S'ray to be the cool adult. Failing because he's ridiculously sappy

Thalassa & Symfonos - mismatched set on the outskirts, happy to be here but they're vibing purely because this is the easiest place for them. Never gelled that much but it's nice to be around other werecreatures. Part of the band, will travel, do not get them involved in any of the fights please

Hayk - everyone needs an edge not-teen! he's bad at admitting he's made mistakes! He's kinda trying (he's very trying)! He'll bitch but he's got your back

Makkarin - somehow the Adult. Needs to be left alone with his research. Good for asking if he's proud of you because he will be so earnest about it. Don't mess up his notes mkays

Tab & Pain & Maggie - honestly they're here because there is a bar and Maggie needs somewhere to keep an eye on Tab. Pain cooks because he thinks he needs to be useful to be kept around. Maggie is the oldest one here and has a little bit of "these darned kids" but she's proud of them really. Tab thinks this is great fun but they need to stop cutting her off and also give her more access to drums

1. What au for your story you think would be interesting to explore? Have you ever written a, hm, fanfiction? authorfiction? about it?

2. What major would your ocs pick in collage? It can be an irl major or related to your universe! (eg. elvish literature)

Hello happy STS! Very kind of you aha and because this is now. also a week late. I will answer both!

I'm gonna be apologising for all these asks being late lmao my bad

So. what AU/fic/authorfic? Oh buddy listen so. The obvious answer here is - the NightGales! They started out in fic! and then my interest in the fic died (because I'd written to the ending I wanted) and so I just. transposed them. into Leritheyar where they can continue living out their light piracy lives with dragons.

Sometimes one of my old roleplay people still (always) asks for more writing of them in various spin-off aus of the original so I guess I'm still playing about there 🙃

The less obvious answer is also Leritheyar based - one of the novel ideas I will almost definitely never write had. 7? potential endings? and while most of the stuff that came after ran the same way, there were still some fun variations when it was a magic vs tech based society. Leiri still generally becomes the monster of nightmares but sometimes she becomes a god about it. I think there's one "good" ending where she doesn't do either? maybe? 🤷

N what majors would they pick, hm...

ok since we've talked Leritheyar let's just. stay? with some of those charas from the first instance?

Leiri - my first instinct is some sort of music degree, but like. that's where she'd start out, and I think she'd slowly shift towards uh... oh she would. she would end up in a history degree lmao. She would attempt to make it a subtle slide but at some point her friends are going to turn around and go "wait a minute" bc she's just never mentioned it

Melisande - dance! She's is here for performance arts and learning as many styles of dance as possible. Probably spends as much time as possible doing extracurricular showcases and making sure they count towards her degree

(the two of them probably met in the music department, I imagine Leiri still does a lot of the band/orchestra stuff for showcases bc she enjoys that part)

S'ray - would be some sort of conservation degree, but they 100% hang out with all the arts kids so no one actually knows what they're doing. There are bets. everyone is wrong.

Orith - started out as a legacy kid doing like. law or accounting or smth and then Melisande lures him into performance bit by bit, one showcase at a time

WCC Excerpt Chapt 1

you might recognise part of this from a last line tag a couple days ago! Here’s the full scene

There was a strange creature in the yard when I stepped outside. It was... almost like a sphinx, except it had no wings. But that chimera-like feel, made of multiple animals that somehow... fit together.

I pulled the door shut behind me and didn’t quite give it a wide berth as I headed for the gate, but I didn’t take my eyes off it either.

The last thing I needed right now was a riddle from a sphinx. I had places to be and tunes to practice.

As I shifted my flute case from one hand to the other, so I could unlatch the gate, it arched its back and stretched out, all cat-like.

“What’s your name?” it asked. Not a standard sphinx-like question.

I considered it carefully. “Only what people call me,” I replied.

It laughed, sitting upright. “Well aren’t you a clever one!”

I didn’t know how to respond to that.

“I’m not a sphinx, if that’s what you’re worried about. Or of the Fair Folk, though I didn’t think they were in this world.”

“They aren’t native,” I replied without thinking. “But people travel.”

It looked pleased in a very cat-like way, which... largely made sense. It mostly appeared to be a cat. “Would you be one such person?”

“... No.” I shook my head. “Now - I don’t mean to cause any offence, but I have to be going.” I unlatched the gate and stepped out, latching it behind me.

It leapt down from the wall to follow me up the winding track into the forest.

I was beginning to think that maybe I shouldn’t have left the house at all. I didn’t have to practice amongst the trees, but...

“All I’m asking is your name,” it said. “And then maybe I’ll be gone.”

“And you’ll know that by my name?” I knelt on the grass to open my flute case.

“That’s the idea.” It sat at the base of a tree, its odd fur-and-feathers tail half swept around its feet.

“And if the names match?” I slotted my flute together.

“Then you’ve got a journey ahead of you.”

“Do I get a choice?”

“What teenager doesn’t dream of adventure?”

“This one.” I blew through my flute to warm it up and stood.

“There isn’t really a choice. It’s complicated.”

“Quest calls always are.” I flicked it a glance. Quests were commonplace, but... I’d hoped not to be chosen for one. Not after my brother...

I sighed and played a few notes, adjusting for tuning.

“One word. That’s all I’m asking.”

“All you’re asking right now. Would you give out yours?”

It hesitated. “Names are power.”

“You understand, then.”

“My world is in danger. I cannot afford that.”

A real Traveller. I studied it again, cover, over the end of my flute. It truly didn’t look like any creature I knew of, after all. Close to a sphinx, but... not.

I sighed and looked away. “My name is Leiri.”

I heard the quiet intake of breath and tightened my hands on my flute.

It didn’t reply. When I looked back at it, it was gone.

I hoped that would be the end of it, but I had a horrible feeling it wouldn’t be.

But finally, I was alone.

I took a steadying breath, and started to play.
