Liam is used to needing to lock himself up for the full moons and in preparation for the move to Mystic Falls he had a bunker installed in the back yard of the family home. Not wanting to risk hurting anyone on the moon but giving him enough space to move around. He is never sure when his children might trigger their curse and wants to be prepared. The entrance is easily hidden and being from a military background it is easy enough to explain away why he wanted a shelter put in place. To ensure its safety he had his wife place a magic lock, that it can only be opened by someone of their family.
