The ending I went with for the werewolf Zack story so far is great.

Because here’s Tseng, he’s just been beaten up by this one guy who’s right there on the floor in the middle of this room. 

Said SOLDIER was ‘taken down’ by what appears to be a mutated wolf - no, wait, it’s technically not actually that, it’s actually Zack, the kid SOLDIER he’d come here with.

Tseng is just pretending he’s got it together and he knows what he’s doing. 

Internally, he is a Turk that is mentally screaming VELD VELD WHAT DO I DO I WASN’T TRAINED FOR THIS, VELD and YOU LOT BETTER HAVE SORTED THIS OUT BEFORE WE GET BACK TO MIDGAR OR ELSE- I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT ELSE! BECAUSE THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE!

Zack currently isn't together enough to figure any of this out for himself, and is only gathering that everyone who he’s seeing as ‘not-Hollander’ is upset and stressed, and he’s just? But it’s okay? Angeal is okay? What’s everyone worried about?

‘Dem wolf instincts, huh. Gotta love ‘em.

In a previous post I mentioned that werewolf Zack’s eyes start showing hints of gold when he’s in a heightened state of emotion.

But... what might these be? Whatever sorts of emotions?

Well...

“I’m hungry and I’m smelling something really good.”

“I just heard that I get to go on a mission and it’s going to be a fun one!”

“ANGEAL’S HERE!!!!”

“I have time off and I can spend it with Cloud!”

“I have free time and I can go to see Aerith!”

“This fight is getting me really pumped up and it’s fun/exciting/pushing me to my limits!”

“There’s a pretty lady and I like Aerith but I need to tell pretty lady that she’s pretty.”

“I’m distressed because I just found out something else about Shinra that I don’t like.”

“Sephiroth’s holed himself away/is off on a long mission and Cloud’s not here either and neither’s Kunsel and I just want to have pack time and I’m feeling restless and upset.”

“UGH, GENESIS.” Or, alternatively, “Hey, I thought I killed him and I don’t know how to feel about him being alive, because I wanted to help him but he’s being an ass and endangering my pack... even though he’s technically part of said pack because of Sephiroth and Angeal...” 

So... yeah. ‘Heightened emotion’, here at least, doesn’t just mean ‘ecstasy/joy/anger/fear/pain’. It’s basically... whatever a wolf would be excited or angry or frustrated over.

He does have ‘calm’ periods, and sometimes the flash of gold only appears in his eyes for just a few seconds, barely enough for it to be noticed as a general thing, so it’d be Seconds and Thirds and army troopers going ‘hey, did you see that?’ ‘huh, no, what’re you talking about? :/’ a lot of the time.

....writing another section of the werewolf Zack fic I’d started several months ago, I think, was not what I had planned for the next thing I worked on.

But, I’m not complaining.

Ok I just saw a picture of Zack as a member of the Nort Squad, and... I find it darkly amusing.

Because just the other day, I was tossing ideas around in my head of ‘what would happen if werewolf Zack found his way into KH ‘verse like with SM Genesis?’

Answer: although in his canon AU Zack’s eyes are like, 80% of the time his normal shade of bright glowing blue, there’s a rough 15% of the time when they look like they’re a weird shade of hazel or green because of the gold that’s trying to recolour his eyes from the pupil outward, which happens when he’s on high extremes of emotion. Good and bad.

And then there’s the 5% chance you’ll see him with eyes that are just... completely gold. Like, seriously, those couldn't be confused as blue eyes at all. Because this Zack is either a) gone completely wolf on you, congratulations you have a big fluffy SOLDIER dog on your hands (but no Genesis, this is not a lapdog, he’s a hunting dog that likes to cuddle if he likes you, and right now he doesn't like you)...

Or b) you have pissed off Zack Fair and his wolf instincts are so damn far to the front that he might be forgetting to use his sword.

And of course with Zack in KH-verse, I had this nifty idea that his eyes just... completely shift golden, simply because of the whole ‘the eyes don’t lie’ thing from Riku. Except Zack’s eyes don’t say anything about darkness, just... ‘this man is attempting to hide the fact that he is actually a wolf’.

Which inevitably ends up with everyone - Sora, Riku, anyone who knows anything about Xehanort, really - taking one look at him and his gold eyes and vaguely cross-shaped scar and going on edge.

Poor Zack doesn’t understand why these people are reacting like this to him. Can’t they just be friends? Please...?

(In the case of SM Genesis being on scene: please imagine him figuring out what’s going on, smiling like the cat that got the canary, and making as many jokes about how Zack really is a puppy as he can possibly get away with.)

Hey, you know how one of the big things for wolves is how tight the pack is, and how you don’t want to separate them off, and how lone wolves are actually in really bad mental, emotional, and probably physical states?

Zack I am so, so sorry.

I managed a few more bits and snippets of the werwolf Zack fic! Starting tomorrow I’ll be getting into the really good stuff.

I think this is maybe the second or third time I’ve tried to start writing the Werewolf Zack AU.

Wish me luck that it’ll actually work this time!
