Interview: Sun Bros - C2E2 2014

At C2E2 this year, I spoke with as many creators as I could about what they do and why they do it. The sound quality is less than amazing, so I’ve transcribed the entire interview for your reading pleasure below.

These are the Sun Bros, creators of Chinatown, Monkey Fist, and Apocalypse Man.

Who are you?

W: We are the Sun Brothers. My name is Wesley Sun. I am the communications director at Sun Bros. Studios.

B: I’m Brad Sun, I’m the creative director.

What do you do?

B: We make comic books. We have three books out right now. Chinatown and Monkey Fist are our two graphic novels and Apocalypse Man is a kind of self contained short story. We both co-write together and I do all the illustrations.

What do you write about?

B: Our books vary in topic but they all have… our sense of humor and some kind of psychological theme to them. And I also like to think that they kind of comment on the nature of storytelling itself… Like, they cover a lot of different categories. Chinatown’s kind of a haunted house ghost story set in Chinatown. Monkey Fist is a modern irreverent retelling of Journey to the West, the Monkey King story. And Apocalypse Man is kind of a subversive take on the survival zombie horror genre.

What was the first comic that you read?

W: First comic that I ever read. Um, I can tell you the first comic that I ever owned. It was an old copy of Web of Spider-Man where he fights the Molten Man. Remember that one? The cover’s actually really interesting because, like, the costume fades into the black. Yeah.

B: The oldest comic I can remember is a really weird Superman comic that I don’t even know what it was about, but, Superman somehow finds this room where there are all these brains in vats that are having experiments run on them, and he has to decide to pull the plug on all of them. So, it was really bizarre, I don’t know why we had this one issue of the comic that seemed like a hallucination, but we had it.

That sounds very Silver.

B: Right.

What’s your favorite dinosaur?

W: Triceratops.

B: I like that one that has like, the big fin on its back…

W: Dimetrodon!

B: Yeah, dimetrodon, yeah.
