A Snowy Walk Through Green Ridge And West Hazleton: Part Two.
After my morning walk through the streets of Green Ridge and West Hazleton, , which was the subject of an earlier blog, I spent the morning at my home. My law office was closed because of the snow storm. I was able to work from home. I made phone calls and checked e-mails until lunch. The snow had stopped soon after my walk. After lunch I took my afternoon walk earlier than usual (I walk…

Snow And Some Memories: A Wintery Walk Through The Streets Of Green Ridge And West Hazleton: Part 1
We were lucky for most of this Winter here in Northeastern Pennsylvania. It has been mild with little snow or ice. Well, it is February and I knew Winter was only half over here so I wasn’t surprised when the local weather forecasters started predicting the possibility of heavy snow on Tuesday. There was a debate on the amount of snow we would get as the storm developed. The forecasts were…

Un #Aries detesta la rutina. Sépanlo.
My hometown of Hazleton, PA was nicknamed "mob city" by the Philadelphia Inquirer in the 70's. If my grandparents were to be believed, the city's mob connections go back quite a bit further than that.
Take, for example, my great-uncle, Georgie Brehm. Truthfully, I'm not 100% sure how (or if) I am related to him, but my grandparents spoke of him often. He ran Brehm's Restaurant on Broad Street (currently the home of Hell's Kitchen Pizza). My father told me that, as a child, he was given a perforated notebook of counterfeit $5 bills by someone at the restaurant, but my grandmother wouldn't let him keep it. Georgie also owned a place that my family referred to as "The Grove", which I am assuming is the night club that is referred to in this news article. I know that it used to stand on Route 309 where the Providence Place nursing home is today, and I was told that Al Capone allegedly hid out there at some point during his life. I have no idea if that's true.
One of these days, I'd like to get an Ancestry.com account and piece my family history together. I doubt, however, that I'll find too many mob stories, and just about everyone who could tell the stories from memory has since passed away.
