Save It For The Sheriff

Tough ranch boss Helena Monro wasn’t prepared to hear any excuses when she caught newly-hired hand Luke Armitage helping himself to the pay packets due to the men that week from the ranch safe room. After having got the drop on Luke, the angry young woman marched the chastened cowboy outside in order to tie him up. “I just needed some extra for my kid’s birthday, ma’am…” Luke lied while his lady boss bound him. Helena was unimpressed. “Save it for the sheriff, Armitage.” she told her captive sharply. “And just pray the boys don’t return before I can deliver you to him in Dry Gulch!”

Luke swallowed. “Can you hurry up with roping me then, ma’am?” he urged nervously.

Dutiful

“How long you going to keep me here, ma’am?” the bound Sergeant Barlow asked his mysterious raven-haired captor through cracked lips as the woman poured some coffee into a tin mug to awkwardly tip down his throat. “You know they’ll be looking for me by now, don’t you?”

The woman remained impassive. “They’ll never find you here, soldier.” she replied with quiet confidence, concentrating on not spilling a drop. “Now you just lie back and reconsider your dutiful refusal to let me and the girls know what we need to know. It really will go better for you that way…”

The Confession

“That’s right, ma’am,” Joey told Sheriff Anna after she had persuaded the outlaw to surrender to her and confess his membership of the Swamp River Gang, “the rest of the boys are camped over by Cactus Ridge. They won’t have missed me yet, so if you go now, you’ll catch them napping.” Anna stood up and patted Joey on the shoulder. “You a good boy, son.” she told him, “If I can get into town in the next twenty minutes, I can get a posse out to Cactus Ridge pronto.”

She stood up then and removed the bandana from around her bare-chested but bound prisoner’s neck. “I’ll have to gag you before I go, Joey,” she told the man regretfully. Joey looked up at her trustingly. “I know, ma’am,” he replied, “but so long as you put in a word with me with the judge, I guess I can cope with not being able to talk for awhile.” Anna nodded and tied the bandana around the outlaw’s mouth, cleave gagging him. “I’ve not tied you too tight, honey,” Anna went on, checking the ropes around Joey’s wrists, arms and ankles, “but tight enough to stop you from going for a stroll.”

“Mmmph.” acknowledged Joey, and, with a rustle of skirts, the woman sheriff of Refuge Town left young Joey to contemplate life, locked in the gang’s own hideout.
