Angela and Lionel Henderson emerged wearily from the cave entrance to the mine. Angela was supporting her exhausted looking father. “See, Dad,” the young woman said excitedly, “I told you we have been rescued by this wonderful, strong woman.” Jane smiled broadly at the pair. “My name is Jane Clayton, wife of Tarzan, Lord Greystoke.” she told the academic and his daughter. “Delighted to meet you.” Professor Anderson’s eyes widened, clearly impressed. “My word, Lady Greystoke,” he replied, “what a delight to meet you too and thankyou for saving us from those rogues!” Jane smiled again. “I couldn’t have done it without the help of your brave daughter, Professor,” she said, “she is a remarkable young woman.” Angela looked slightly embarrassed but nodded in acknowledgement of Jane’s compliment. In the meantime, the jungle woman turned to the bound and sullen looking Maddox. “I believe you know this gentleman, Professor.” she said grimly. “Oh yes,” breathed Henderson, a hard look in his eyes.
“Now perhaps between you can tell me exactly what has been going on here?” Jane asked, her eyes moving between her prisoner and the Hendersons.

As Angela hurried away to release her father, Jane quickly and efficiently tied Hargreaves’ hands behind his back. “You gotta believe me, ma’am,” the man pleaded as he was bound, “I had nothing to do with all this. Maddox and Kane, they’re the real bad guys!” Jane was unimpressed. She remembered being chased and threatened by the whole gang when they had the advantage of male strength and numbers, including Hargreaves. “You’ll get your chance to tell your story when I take you and your two buddies in.” the jungle woman told her captive briskly. After she had finished tying him, she pushed the unhappy Hargreaves into a sitting position and then retrieved more of the rope, lying on the dusty ground.
Jane looked down at the two other men, still lying half stunned, struggling to recover. "Now for you two crooks," she said as much to herself as to the defeated criminals, "I'd better get you secured too, before you get your strength back." As the woman crouched down next to Kane and began to manoeuvre the man onto his front, Chi-chi suddenly sprang into a joyous dance, delighted at his mistress' triumph. Jane laughed. "Yes, Chi-chi," she acknowledged, "I couldn't have done this without your help - or Angela's." She briefly glanced towards the mine's entrance, searching for her rescuer's reappearance.

In rage, Leonidas thrust Anticleia from him and, breathing hard, paused and scanned the battlefield. His female opponent did so also. What greeted the two combatants was a sight that dismayed the Thracian King and delighted the Amazon commander. Everywhere the Themiscyran warriors were victorious, either driving the enemy before them, cutting down male warriors, including unfortunate souls attempting to surrender, or capturing the fords across the Thermidor, trapping the invaders on the other side. Her black hair swirling as she turned to the anguished King, Anticleia said to him in a low voice: “You must yield to me now, King. What more do you need to convince you that your cursed attack on the Amazons has failed? Surrender to me now and tell your men to drop their weapons and I shall order my warriors to stop slaying them and instead be merciful." The conflicted monarch gazed at the triumphant woman in despair and dismay, filled with indecision. At that moment a disheveled Thracian herald arrived, wide-eyed, on the scene. "Majesty," he gasped in a choking voice, "it grieves me to tell you that Hyperion, that mighty warrior, has been slain by the she-devils!"
Leonidas looked stunned and initially said nothing, his brow furrowed as if in thought. "Sire?" the herald persisted. "Enough." the King replied at length, his voice cracking slightly. "Enough. This is already too much." He turned slowly to face the wary Anticleia. He flung his mighty sword to the ground, followed by his helmet. He spoke again, but to the herald. "Idaeus, tell the battalion commanders to have their men to throw down their arms." he ordered in a thick voice. "Tell them their King wills it." Idaeus stood astounded for a moment and then took off back into the fray, seeking the commanders. Leonidas then spoke to Anticleia. "I yield, and so do my defeated forces, my lady." he told the Amazon gravely.

Disturbed Sleep
