MILL GIRLS MEMORIAL: Mill Girls, In the 19th century, worked long and hard hours in the textile mills in Lowell, Massachusetts. I can only imagine what their lives were like. I made these two stereo tintypes for them. Stereoscopic photography, This was the first 3D imagery, dates back to the 1840’s and by the 1850’s it was very popular. People would use stereo’s much the same way we use instagram - as a device of wonder. By Using a Lorgnette stereo card viewer you can see the “stereo effect.” Place the viewer on the tip of your nose and then place over the center of each individual photograph. Find the best distance (around 10”) for your eyes to focus and then relax your eyes. The photograph will become three dimensional. This print is on display at Western Avenue Studios (@westernavearts) on the 5th floor A-wing just off the elevator. This Saturday is Open Studios and I’ll be there from 12noon to 5pm in studio A516. The heat wave should be over and a cooler day predicted. Stop in and say hello. The sunsets from my Western Avenue Studio in Lowell, Massachusetts, are beautiful. I enjoy the blend of the natural world and the industrial landscape of Lowell, which was a planned manufacturing mill center for textiles, being built in the 19th century.
