the zambian cities series: senanga part one — the river bank town at the bottom of the flood
the name: sinanga in the original lozi — meaning river bank. the town sits on the eastern bank of the zambezi, at the point where the river bends southward away from the floodplain and begins its journey toward victoria falls. a second account renders the meaning as "place of the many reeds." either way, the name is a physical description: a town whose identity is inseparable from the water beside it.
the founding: declared a district in 1935 through proclamation no. 5 of december 1934 — the same proclamation that divided northern rhodesia into five provinces. before that, part of the barotseland protectorate — the territory of the lozi kingdom formalised through the lochner concession of 1890.
the barotse floodplain's southern limit: senanga occupies the downstream marker of the entire floodplain system — the town where the barotse floodplain ends and the zambezi begins its transition toward victoria falls.
the ngonye falls: approximately 50km south of senanga, the zambezi passes over the ngonye falls — dropping approximately 25 metres across a width of approximately 150 metres, embedded in miombo woodland and wetland rich in birdlife, within the sioma ngwezi national park (5,000 km2 along the zambia-angola border).
the zambezi river economy: fish — tigerfish, bream, catfish — are the primary protein source and cash economy for fishing communities. the senanga ferry crossing — a flat-bottomed rope-and-pulley pont — connects the east bank to the road system providing access westward toward kalabo and the liuwa plain national park.
senanga sits quietly at the bottom of the flood, beside the river, at the gateway to one of africa's most extraordinary wild places.
