4 Reasons to Rent an Apartment in Wheaton
With bigger-named Montgomery County suburbs like Bethesda, Silver Spring and Rockville, neighboring Wheaton can fall through the cracks. A census designated place, in 2010, Wheaton was home to 48,284 residents.
Here are four reasons to consider renting an apartment in Wheaton:
Location – Yes, the old reliable. But that’s the thing with renting in the area; you’re close to the city and, in this case, many other D.C. suburbs as well. Wheaton sits right above the I-495 Capital Beltway and is bisected by major artery Georgia Avenue, which runs straight into the city. Famously, Wheaton has its own Metrorail station on the Red Line, named, are you ready for this? Wheaton. There’s also a station below and above it, so commuting to the District is easy.

Size matters: Wile away the weekend hours at Westfield Wheaton (formerly Wheaton Plaza), which is actually larger than its fancier cousin, Westfield Montgomery, in Bethesda. (Ryan Crierie via Flickr)
Westfield Wheaton – Most good-sized towns have convenient shopping, and folks here have Westfield Wheaton. Macy’s, JCPenney and Target anchor the mall.
Wheaton Regional Park – This 536-acre park gives you plenty to do. Don’t believe me? Here’s what the park’s Web page says: “Take a ride on the train, go horseback riding, have a picnic … ice skate or play ball. Relax and tour Brookside Gardens’ grounds and conservatory, attend a nature program, or traverse the trails and discover the park’s beauty.”

Chuck Levin’s Washington Music Center – When does a music store count as a reason to rent in a particular town? When it’s Chuck Levin’s music store. Chuck Levin’s Washington Music Center has a colorful history. It was founded in 1960 by Chuck and his wife Marge in Washington, D.C. After it burned down in the 1968 riots, the business moved to Veirs Mill Road in Wheaton, where it remains today. On its LinkedIn page, the store boldly claims to be “the largest independent music store in the country!” Take a look at the site (I’ve never been there, but someday hope to make the trek) and you’ll believe it.
Whether you’re looking for a Fender American Standard Stratocaster (or something much, much cheaper), a starter drum set, a turntable, or even the latest in sound equipment, this place is a veritable treasure trove for the dabbler and serious musician alike.
