Travel drama after the T20 World Cup as ICC denies England were given priority flights
The dust from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup has barely settled, and the tournament has already produced a strange off field storyline.
This time it has nothing to do with runs or wickets. It’s about flights.
Several international teams are still in India trying to arrange their journeys home, and the situation has sparked debate after the England national cricket team were able to leave earlier than others.
The International Cricket Council has now responded, firmly denying claims that England received special treatment.
England departed India shortly after their semi final defeat to the India national cricket team on March 5.
Meanwhile, players from the West Indies cricket team and the South Africa national cricket team have remained in the country waiting for confirmed travel arrangements.
The main issue appears to be air travel disruption across parts of West Asia.
The commonly used connecting route through Dubai is currently unavailable, which has forced organisers to rethink departure plans for multiple squads at the same time.
In practical terms, that means fewer routes, fewer available flights, and a lot more logistical juggling.
The West Indies squad has stayed in Kolkata since their elimination during the Super Eight stage of the competition.
South Africa also remain in India following their semi final loss to the New Zealand national cricket team while officials continue working on viable travel routes.
Once England managed to depart, the conversation online shifted quickly.
Some fans and commentators wondered whether larger cricket boards were receiving preferential treatment when travel options were limited.
The ICC pushed back against those accusations.
Officials say departure schedules are determined strictly by practical factors like airspace availability, flight permissions and operational safety. In other words, whichever team can safely travel first gets the earliest route.
Still, the situation has sparked frustration in a few corners of the cricket world.
