Don't Joke About Those We Honor

Think twice, then think again, before you make jokes about those you are meant to honor. In most cases, avoid making your wife, your parents, or the aged the butt of the joke, especially in public. Give honor to whom honor is due (Romans 13:7). The Westminster Shorter Catechism reads as follows, “The fifth commandment requires the preserving the honor, and performing the duties, belonging to every one in their several places and relations, as superiors, inferiors or equals.”

Q. What is required of those that hear the word preached?

A. It is required of those that hear the word preached, that they attend upon it with diligence, preparation, and prayer; examine what they hear by the Scriptures; receive the truth with faith, love, meekness, and readiness of mind, as the Word of God; meditate, and confer of it; hide it in their hearts, and bring forth the fruit of it in their lives.
