1914/15 Trio to 2162 Pte F Stuart Westmorland & Cumberland Yeomanry Fred Stuart was born in 1896 in the small hamlet of Threlkeld, located just outside of Keswick in the Lake District. He attested for the Westmorland And Cumberland Yeomanry on 7th August 1913. In civilian life he found work as a Labourer, however at the time of the 1911 census he as working as a Horseman on Scales Farm. He landed in France on 10th July 1915 with the 1/1 Battalion and served as Lieutenant Parker's servant. On 23rd December 1916, he was transferred and went to work in the Tin Mines just outside of Threlkeld and was demobbed in January 1919 Tragically he lost three brothers during the Great War. Birkett Stuart was killed in action on 4th November 1918 with the 7th Border Regiment. Thomas Stuart was killed in action on 3rd July 1916 with the 8th Border Regiment, and Charles Henry Stuart was killed with 1st Regiment South African Infantry at Delville Wood on 18th July 1916.
