UvA: artches - Everyone says "I love You"
But for some reason, it still took 3 years of the getting a permission and not a sign of ownership on behalf of Sloterdijk Community. What holds back the OGA, the ORAM, the Westpoort?
We asked the UvA students to dig into this issue.
The Westpoort Identity…
Case-holder: ARTCHES (Glamorous Outcasts)
ARTCHES Open Art Galleries will nest in the heart of the new Sloterdijk Station in Westpoort Amsterdam: The third biggest station in Amsterdam and ninth in the Netherlands. The ultimate goal is urban regeneration and community involvement through the ARTCHES project through a successful symbioses of international and local art with architecture. We want to be on a Culture Map, whilst giving Westpoort a face, and hence life. The ARTCHES project is widely recognised and used by municipality to promote the more social approach to the area development, rather than the uber-industrial, Shanghai style.
Problem: ARTCHES was created by local residents out of necessity and not for pure self-indulgence. “I am in transit” and never “I am at Sloterdijk” say people on the phone to communicate their location. But how come the newest, most potential station in Amsterdam is merely a ‘transit’ location and never a destination? What would make it a space of recognition instead? It seems as though a lack of an identity to which people can relate also leads to a lack of feeling ownership over the space. As a result companies don’t want to participate and the government is wary to sponsor the gallery activities. Sloterdijk requires identification and some sort of critical mass to engage users with thus abandoned space.
Question: How can a feeling of ownership and identification with the open space around Sloterdijk/Nieuw-West be increased?
Case Study: A number of pillars have been assigned to ARTCHES for creative use. Other areas under the station have been assigned to other organisations such as De Doetank and Westergasfabriek. This gives room for possibilities in a collaborative sense. In the meantime it has to become clear what makes the Sloterdijk space a possible place for people that already make use of it, but without a positive form of recognition. The pillars are the first step in the process. But the final advice could entail much more.
