Choosing the Best Pool Liner Type
Installing a pool can be an exciting process, bringing the family together to share their anticipation of cool summertime activity. The setup process isn’t that simple though, and there are several factors you need to consider before groundbreaking starts. Aside from choosing exactly where the pool should go, you must consider shape, surrounding décor, and a proper liner to install. While not something many consider as they make the decision to get a pool installed, pool liners can have a significant impact on your experience as a pool owner. As we dive deeper into the different kinds of pool liners, you’ll learn why some are better suited for your preferences than others.
Different Kinds of Pool Liners
It may surprise you that there are several types of pool liners for you to choose from. Liners range in thickness from 20 mil to 30 mil, and vary mostly in the ways that they can be installed to the body of the pool.
Uni-bead liner: This liner type is designed for an above-ground pool and features a small plastic piece that slides into a fitted track that goes around the perimeter of the pool wall to keep it in place.
J-hook: Very similar to a uni-bead minus the plastic piece, the J-hook has a J-shaped lip (hence the name) that hangs over the wall of the pool and does not need any strips to keep it in place. This is possibly the easiest liner style to install, since it only hangs over the wall, but it can only be installed in flat-ground pools.
Overlap: This is a liner that goes right over the edge of an above-ground pool, and it is then sinched into place using what is called coping strips. These liners are very durable and come in varying design types. Overlap liners are also only made for flat-ground pools and cannot accommodate different floor depths. Another downside is that the hang over design can look unsightly.
Inground vinyl liner: A liner type that is typically bought when the pool is, these liners come in all shapes and sizes to fit the floor of your pool, and are held in place using a reverse coping strip. These types are usually replaced every six to ten years.
