HOW TO GLAMOUR WAVES I had a couple anons ask me how to do these curls. I'm too lazy to redo a set and take pictures so I'll just have to verbally walk you through it. Technically this is a wet set, and you can find a ton of YouTube tutorials. When I was first learning them, there was one by thecherrydollface that I found extremely helpful. So to start, you will need: A few packages of sponge rollers, the kind your grandma wears. The thinner the better, you'll get more defined curl A setting lotion/wrap spray. Can usually be found in the ethnic hair care section. General pin up consensus is lottabody is the best. You can buy it at Sally Beauty. Argan oil, some kind of light weight nourishing anti frizz oil. Not absolutely crucial, but it will make your life easier. Pomade. Suavecita is the best for this kind of thing, but you can still get by with regular old men's pomade like crew. A very soft bristle brush. I'm a cheater and use mine for brushing, teasing and smoothing because I can't be bothered to keep track of three different brushes. A really good hair spray. My personal fave is Kenra but even aquanet is good. You just don't want your hair to budge. If it seems like you need a lot of product for this kind of hairstyle, well you do. Bright side is, you don't use a ton in one sitting, do it lasts along time. Except the hair spray you gonna burn through that shit lol. So first things first, I mix my setting lotion. Lottabody needs to be diluted a little or else is really dries out your hair. Take any spray bottle, and mix one third lottabody, one third Argan oil and one third plain old water. Shake it up before use. Next, don't wash your hair right before you do this. I find it looks best, and lasts the longest if you do this on hair that is one day dirty. So now that we're all prepped it's time to get started. First, get your hair visiblg damp with the setting lotion. Don't completely drench your hair though, especially if you have really thick already curly hair that takes forever to dry, because then your hair will have to sit in those rollers for like two days and that's just damn inconvenient. So, spray until damp but not drenched. Next, starting from the top, where you part your hair, take a section about an inch thick, brush it smooth and start rolling it on a curler. Your ends should go over and under the curler, not the other way. Try to roll it by holding it high over your head. The higher you hold it, the more volume you get, and trust me, we want some volume. There a ton of rolling patterns out there to find based on what sort of style you want to do. I just have mine follow the natural way my hair falls starting at my side part. Some people roll the hair to, or away from their face, I just roll it down. Remember, if you want your hair to have that glamour wave effect, do your best to take an even amount of hair for each roller. So, ten millennia later, you've finished rolling all of your hair and you look like a certified old lady. You're probably tired now, which is a good thing because it's time to go to bed. I suppose there's nothing wrong with setting your hair in the morning and wearing it all day, but who does that lol. If you are going to bed, wrap your hair in a bonnet, a scarf, or even an old t shirt to help keep the rollers in place, and keep them from frizzing too bad. Use a material like cotton that lets moisture pass through, because if you seal that damp hair in there with a fabric that holds in moisture your hair will never dry. So now go get your 8 hours of sleep. If might be a little uncomfortable the first few times you try to sleep in these. Try laying a really soft squishy pillow on a normal pillow so it sort of envelops your head hahaha. Once your hair is dry all the way to the ends you can start taking your rollers out, but you can leave them in as long as you feel like once dry, it won't hurt your hair. Now it's time to get crazy. Before you start taking your rollers out, coat your hands in pomade. It helps. Start taking your rollers out at the base of your neck, and take them out one by one moving up and towards your face. As you take each one out, brush it out a few times, give it a spritz of hair spray and tease at the roots. If ends are looking a little frizzy, first of all that means you didn't roll very nearly which takes practice, and two, you can take them with a little extra pomade. Repeat this ritual with literally every curl. It's gonna take awhile. Now that you've finally finished, you're probably looking horrified into the mirror saying, I look like a poodle! Or something to that effect. That's okay, it's supposed to look a little crazy, you're not done yet. Take a section about the width of your palm, and work some pomade into the ends. Now brush that section 100 times. If it's still too bouncy and curly for your liking, brush it 100 more times. Just keep brushing until you're satisfied with how your hair looks. This is very tedious, but absolutely essential, so just brush until you think your arm is going to fall off and brush some more. Brush brush brush brush brush. So now, after a century of brushing, your hair is looking super cute!! If you find you need some more volume in a section, tease your roots, smooth down any frizz with a little bit of pomade, and then blast that fucked until it's crispy with hair spray. Vintage hair is not supposed to be touchable and soft. Throughout the day, if you find your hair is getting a little frizzy, just run your brush through it again for a quick touch up. The nice thing about wet sets is these curls are practically indestructible, so long as they don't get wet. You can make a set last several days, as long as you take the care to wrap your hair up in a scarf or bonnet so it won't become frizzy. In the morning, do a quick brush through and smooth with pomade and you're good to go! And so that's how you do a wet set brush out. If you need a visual tutorial, I highly recommend you watch thecherrydollface tutorial on YouTube! Bye bye!
