ወይባ ጢስ (Weyba Tis) is a traditional Amhara smoke bath practice, especially common among women in Wollo region. It’s a deeply rooted cultural and wellness ritual used for cleansing, healing, and beautification. Women sit over smoldering aromatic wood—often olive or other medicinal plants—allowing the smoke to envelop their bodies. This is believed to help with postpartum recovery, menstrual health, and skin rejuvenation.
The ritual is often performed:
After childbirth, to help the body heal.
Before or after major holidays or weddings, as a form of beautification.
As a rite of passage for young women entering adulthood.
In rural areas, it’s a communal and symbolic event, sometimes involving family members gathering wood and preparing the space. Nowadays, In urban settings like Addis Ababa, it’s also offered as a paid wellness service.
