Streets of Wollo. Amhara, Ethiopia.
ወይባ ጢስ (Weyba Tis) is a traditional Amhara smoke bath practice, especially common among women in Wollo region. It’s a deeply rooted cultural and wellness ritual used for cleansing, healing, and beautification. Women sit over smoldering aromatic wood—often olive or other medicinal plants—allowing the smoke to envelop their bodies. This is believed to help with postpartum recovery, menstrual health, and skin rejuvenation.
The ritual is often performed:
After childbirth, to help the body heal.
Before or after major holidays or weddings, as a form of beautification.
As a rite of passage for young women entering adulthood.
In rural areas, it’s a communal and symbolic event, sometimes involving family members gathering wood and preparing the space. Nowadays, In urban settings like Addis Ababa, it’s also offered as a paid wellness service.

Diffraction opal from Ethiopia...
The high quality volcanic opals of Wollo Province have burst upon the gem scene over the last decade. This 4.43 carat cabochon is unique in showing a diffraction pattern in the play of colour. The points of light move in a synchronised manner and change colour when the light source is moved.

How do you teach your kids the value of money in the digital age? The makers of Pigzbe, a digital wallet for kids, think it involves cryptocurrency.
“You can still buy real things with Pigzbe; the app will actually include its own marketplace of toys and other things kids might want.”
The more kids buy Wollo tokens, the richer the Pigzbe folks become.
New startup “Pigzbe” offers a “family-friendly” cryptocurrency that lets six-year-olds start collecting their own crypto tokens.
