On the Immorality of Killing Zeds
To the people of UChicago and the surrounding areas who are currently safe within the walls:
I am writing to all of you today because I think it’s important to talk about the other side of things. It may be controversial, but I know I’m not the only one who has the view that it’s unjust to kill zeds without provocation.
First of all, they were human beings like us, once. There’s still a chance that they’ll be cured and we can’t just kill them if there’s that chance. It would be an injustice to them and to the people that care about them.
I, of course, don’t mean that you should just let a zed kill you if you’re being attacked by one. If it is between your life and the life of a zed, I think that we have to put our own lives first because otherwise we’re not really living for anything, right? I just mean that we shouldn’t go out of our way to kill them.
Second of all, it’s dangerous. If we go out of our way to kill them, like Callie did, then we’re just putting ourselves in a position where we could become infected and then infect the rest of the University of Chicago community. We’re already safe in the walls, so there’s no reason to take that risk.
Again, this doesn’t mean that we should never leave the walls--that’s impossible. We need to get more food and medicine from outside the walls in order to stay alive. There’s just no need to go on an expedition or anything outside the walls solely for the sake of killing zeds.
So I guess what I’m trying to say is that if I were in their place, I wouldn’t want people to give up on me and go out of their way just to kill me.
To anyone out there who agrees with me, just know: you’re not alone.
