And welcome to #AfterTheCastle, a website that publishes parody sequels of popular children’s stories with a feminist twist. And more importantly, the parodies are made for children.
What do you mean by “feminist” you may ask? Although “feminist” may seem like an explicitly gendered term geared towards women’s equality, “feminist” is actually an all-encompassing word that means “equality for all”. Our stories will not only touch upon issues of gender, but also race, class, and the LGBTQ community.
The reason we have started this project is that we have indisputably found notions of gender inequality (and other forms of inequality) are ingrained in children as soon as they are able to engage with media and entertainment. We would like to give children the option to question these notions, rather than take them at face value and perpetuate them. Hopefully, this access to different viewpoints will create a more sensitive and inclusive society.
Important Disclaimer: We are using StoryJumper to publish our parodies. StoryJumper provides the option to publish our stories for a fee and includes a “Buy for $1.95” button at the top of every story. There is no need to purchase our stories. They are free to read online. Unfortunately, we do not know how to get rid of this option. So we’ve chosen to publish our stories on Tumblr as this platform does not feature the purchasing option.
