📍Taiji Whale Museum in Taiji, Wakayama Prefecture 🐳 Taiji Whale Museum in Taiji in Wakayama Prefecture, south of Nachi-Katsuura, Nachi, and Shingu is a fascinating museum on three storeys that tells the history of whaling in the local area. The adjoining dolphinarium and whale show zone has performances by live cetaceans. The first floor of the museum has skeletons of various whales on display with the second floor having rare samples of whale earwax, whale sexual organs and baleen - the filter-feeder system inside the mouths of baleen whales. The third floor is the most interesting and accessible having English-language wall panels describing the advent of Western style whaling techniques, including explosive harpoons and steam ships, and the effect these new innovations had on the Japanese whaling industry after the opening up of the country to globalization in the latter half of the 19th century.
