You want to know the worst thing about evil?
It never starts out loud and obvious.
It’s quiet, innocent looking.
It’s a soft whisper of assurance.
“No one is getting hurt.” “Oh but it tastes so good, surely it won’t be bad to take another.”
It eases you, it massages and preps you, little by little.
When you get to the point where it starts appearing bad, the voice chimes in.
“Oh you’re overreacting, you’ve already done X, surely Y won’t be so bad. It’s not even that bad.”
Maybe it hurts someone, the voice will justify it.
“Clearly this person is bad, so them getting hurt is no big deal. It’s just one person. It’s someone that can afford it.”
All the justifications, and you even start justifying it to yourself, the guilt of your actions starting to seep in, maybe you want to turn back.
But that’s where Evil is so clever, it might have others there to help pull you in deeper, make it multiple voices assuring you your actions are okay. For misery loves company.
And so you keep going.
Then when you are doing the acts that even you can’t ignore anymore. It’s so vile you want to vomit, so sickening you can’t pretend you are right. That’s when the shift happens. The calm assuring voice changes to cynical mocking. It laughs at you.
“Do you really think anyone will forgive you? After everything you’ve done? You think you can take it all back? No one will love you if they know. Admitting now would show everyone how pathetic you are.”
And so people are dragged in deeper, either by submission of guilt and shame, or twisting themselves to be evil and trying to find some sort of joy from the sins they have commited.
But even so, even if you think it’s over, that you are too far gone, you aren’t. You can still turn back, still try to make amends. Don’t let the evil drown you in the black ink of evil.
Don’t let the darkness blind you, for there is still light.
Evil will do anything to keep you in the dark. It will try to twist your morals, try to trick your senses, it will make you call what is bad good and what is good bad. But it only lies. Its delights are poisoned fruit, and it’s touch is morphine laced daggers.
