hi!! I LOVE your account, thank you for all your effort! I was wondering if you could help me with some ideas of scenes or dialogue prompts in a fic j am writing. it is based on a police/crime show where one character is a detective and the other a counsellor who helps on the cases. how could I show them gradually realising they like eachother?
Hi!
First of all, I was such a fan (and still kind of am) of shows like Castle, The Mentalist, Moonlight, Lucifer etc. that all had this kind of detective and consultant thing going on.
So here are some things I remember that could be helpful:
Important moments that get them closer:
a case hit too close to home for one of them and they open up to the other person, so they can comfort them
cases with kids are extremely difficult, but one of them is just perfect with the traumatised children and the other one admires that
the detectives always go for a post-case beer to their favourite bar and maybe it’s time the consultant becomes a real part of the team
one of the witnesses is someone one of them knows and they really do not want to talk to them and their partner teases them at first, but also helps them to get out of that situation with their dignity intact
this one case is just taking way too long with no new lead and one of them takes their partner to the beach or gets them to eat properly and just takes them away from the frustrating case, so that tomorrow they can start again fresh
Prompts that reminded me of this:
In the end no one took the couch. (The perfect “only one bed” trope for a case they have to travel to)
“I’d come for you”, he said. “No matter what, when you need me, I will be there.”
“This was your dumbest idea so far - how on earth did this work out?”
Rules are meant to be broken. But not if you’re a police officer, you idiot!
“One kiss before we die?” “You can get the kiss when we survive, so move!” (The middle of a gun fight is maybe not the right place...)
A little while ago the sirens would have scared her but now all she could feel was relief.
Pick your characters and let them get stuck in traffic. Who sings/wants to play silly games to pass the time? Who’s quietly sitting there? Who’s getting annoyed and pissed at everyone? (Also works with a stake out!)
“Aren’t you supposed to be in prison?” “No man is supposed to be in prison.”
Googling my address does not make you a detective. Good detectives use evidence.
“Shotgun!” “Oh no, your front seat permission has been revoked!”
New prompts:
“Police officer or not - we are partners.”
“If you touch my evidence one more time...”
“Thank you for today. I know you were not trained for this, but... you did good.”
“Tell me again why you have to follow us around?” “Because the boss loves me?” “I think, it is because the boss hates me...”
“I have to trust you. So don’t do anything that makes me lose that trust.”
“I didn’t know I need to say this, but: do not eat the evidence!”
“You will stay in the car. Don’t think I won’t lock you in like the child you sometimes are.” “Will you at least crack the window open?”
“Can I have a gun?” “Oh absolutely not!”
“You were actually a really big help with this case.” “Why do you sound so surprised?”
“You can’t just go up to people and tell them the police thinks they murdered someone!”
I hope some of them are helpful and have fun writing!
