1. As a hello

The first thing Amaya can make out is Zari. Black hair, pulled back, but not tightly enough that strands aren’t falling in her face. Her lips, breaking into a grin, slightly dry and in need of water. She says something, and Amaya watches her mouth move, lips in an o shape and then pulling back into a smile. It takes a moment for Amaya to remember how words work, what they sound like. She slowly registers that Zari has said, “You’re back.”

Amaya’s head throbs for a moment, and her mouth tastes a bit like dirt, if not copper. She makes a small nod, only for her neck to ache- She winces. “Back?” she asks, slowly, thinking out her sentence five times before her mouth goes into motion. “Back from... what?”

“Oh,” Zari says, as the rest of the room begins to settle into focus, still just background noise behind Zari’s bright eyes. “You don’t remember?”

“That’s never a good thing to say,” Amaya says, thoughts trying to piece themselves together. Her memories still have sharp edges, her mind seeping with a sudden flash of pain and desperation. “What happened?”

“It’s kind of-” Zari gestures with her hands. “I mean it’s funny now that you’re awake, I guess, it depends on how you define funny, really, some may say that the classic definition of comedy is-”

“Zari,” Amaya says, slowly. “What happened? Are you okay?”

“I’m-” And she kind of considers that, with a small amount of disbelief. “You got possessed, Amaya.” She puts her hands on her knees, runs her fingers over the material of her jeans. “By Mallus. And I didn’t know if- I mean I think I knew, I had to at least believe- You’re back.”

“How did I get-” Amaya brings her hand to her totem, and tries digging further into her thoughts, but finds gaps, like missing teeth. “Did I hurt you?”

“Oh, yeah,” Zari says. “Like, big time.” She must notice Amaya frown, because she immediately adds, “But I’m all fixed! And you’re- Well, I don’t sense anything wrong with you, anymore. My totem doesn’t. No more darkness.”

“I’m back,” Amaya says. 

Zari opens and closes her mouth, opting to nod. Amaya notes that her eyes are wet. “I love you,” Zari says. “I’m so glad you’re back.”

“Hello to you too,” Amaya says.

“Can I hug you?” Zari asks. “Do you feel up to it?”

“You can kiss me,” Amaya offers. 

So Zari does.
