Nemesis Pt. 1
The office door stood open and low light shone into the quaint room via small openings along the ceiling edges. Daylight from outside illuminated the limestone this place was carved into, giving a lovely day glow that was both inviting and warm. Kage stood behind a simple desk hovered over some invoices with a pen between his teeth and a quill in his left hand. He randomly checked off along the top parchment with brows drawn close in concentration. The owner of the brothel seemed busy at work.
A clear knock rapped against the doorjamb announcing someone to see him. The Ren’dorei pointed the plume of his quill and gave it a wave. The pen in his mouth fell down to land and roll across the desk. “Just put the order somewhere in the hall outside, thanks.” With so many deliveries coming in these days, he merely assumed it was but another.
What is it they say about assumptions?
A throat cleared that caused the warlock to frown and purse his lips. He just lost the tally he’d been double checking… for a third time. Kage breathed heavily out of his nostrils making them flare and lifted his gaze testily. The figure that stood there wasn’t at all whom he’d expected. Ever.
Thalassian: “Hello, Kage.”
That voice. It shook his bones and made him want to sink into the floor and never return. The Sin’dorei that stood at the entrance of the room gave off a smug air and arrogant smile. The black hair seemed particularly shiny today and the amber eyes regarded him as if he were but a bug in his spider web. Kage’s mouth parted as he stood looking ready to back away and bolt at any given moment. Very few things caused such a reaction in the self assured elf since fear was such a rare commodity.
Thalassian: “Aren’t you going to invite me in?”
Sound came out of Kage’s mouth as the quill in his hand snapped in two but a word spoken would be a far stretch. Ink began to spread over his fingers and drip onto the invoice below like abyssal blood droplets.
Thalassian: “What was that? Perhaps my hearing isn’t what it used to be. Say that again?” The elf lifted a slender hand to his lengthy ear, cupping to mock him further. The wicked smile showcased the particularly sharp fangs, both sets above and below.
“What the fuck are you doing here?” Kage felt sucker punched and found it hard to draw air into his lungs.
Thalassian: “I imagine now you are gauging your best exit strategy? Is there a secret panel in the stone behind you? Come now Kage. I know all your habits all too well. Invite me in.”
How the fuck had he gotten into the compound to begin with? Kage had been certain to tailor his wards with particular concern for the undead elf that stood across from him. Sweat beaded along his hairline as well as over his upper lip. He felt sick and rather hyperaware. His pulse echoed loudly in his ears while his eyes saw through the facade of the illusions the visitor kept around him.
Kage slammed his hand onto the desk and fear transformed into rage. “No.” Using the ink he began to trace the sigils necessary in order to ensure the other elf couldn’t reach him in time. The Void was one place he wouldn’t dare tread and the one place that would embrace him as a child coming home. Dark static began to form around the outside edges of the door frame and right about the time it was coming to completion, Kage thrust his other hand out facing the San’lyan.
The ball of felfire shot from the exposed palm with a rather loud whoosh, barreling through the last opening of the closing barrier. The sigil was finished and a Rift portal opened up in the wall behind him. So much for a hidden panel. “Don’t be here when I return or I will end you this time for good.”
Kage didn’t remain to see if the ball of fel nastiness hit the elf, stepping into the portal and becoming once more subject to the Void.
