A note from Demi: Sorry this was posted a day late, but here is my first entry for the @teamcap10 Captain America: Civil War anniversary event. I hope everyone enjoys my take on the prompts, featuring my MCU Original Character and member of Team Cap, Kayla J. Fury (face claim is actress Sophia Bush).

The lounge was full of overlapping voices discussing the Accords. Some of the team were for them, while others were firmly against them.

Kayla Fury sat perched on the couch’s armrest, the Accords open on her lap as she read every page, her own stance becoming clearer with each paragraph she read. Her boot remained propped against the edge of the coffee table, her mahogany hair falling over one shoulder.

Page after page of clauses, restrictions, oversight committees dressed up as accountability. All cleanly written. Clinical. Careful in a way that made Kayla’s jaw tighten. She slammed the document shut, tossing it onto the table and rubbing her eyes. Sam’s and Rhodey’s voices overlapped as they argued over the Accords.

Kayla cast a sideways glance at Steve, who was already reading through the document again, and even with his neutral expression, she could tell his stance on the matter too. Benefit of the pair being partners for years.

Vision cleared his throat, getting everyone’s attention. “In the eight years since Mr. Stark announced himself as Iron Man, the number of known enhanced persons has grown exponentially.” He pointed out. “And during the same period, the number of potentially world-ending events has risen at a commensurate rate.”

Kayla rubbed her temples, “So basically, Vis, you’re saying it’s all our fault.” She sighed heavily, resting her elbows on her knees.

“I'm saying there may be a causality.” Vision corrected. “Our very strength invites challenge. Challenge incites conflict. And conflict breeds catastrophe. Therefore, oversight is not an idea that can be dismissed out of hand.”

“Boom.” Rhodey crossed his arms and nodded.

From her space on the couch, Katerina Stark glanced in Rhodey’s direction and arched her brow. Beside her, still perched on the armrest, Kayla rolled her eyes.

Across from them, Tony laid on his back on a smaller lounger. “You’re being awfully quiet dad.” Kat called her father out.

“It's because he's already made up his mind.” Steve concluded.

“Boy, you know me so well.” Tony groaned, getting to his feet. “There's no decision-making process here. We need to be put in check.” He folded his arms across his chest, leaning against the kitchen counter. “If we can't accept limitations, if we're boundary-less, we're no better than the bad guys.”

Steve let out a sigh. “Tony, someone dies on your watch, you don't give up.”

Tony quirked his brow. “Who said we're giving up?”

“We are if we're not taking responsibility for our actions. This document just shifts the blame.”

“I'm sorry. Steve. That is dangerously arrogant.” Rhodey pointed out.

“No, Steve’s right.” Kayla agreed, clasping her hands in her lap.

Katerina looked up at her best friend, “You can’t be serious. Kay, this the United Nations we're talking about, here. It's not the World Security Council, it's not SHIELD, not HYDRA.”

“So? It’s still a panel run by people with agendas, and agendas always change.” Kayla jumped to her feet, brushing her hair back from her face, trying to keep her composure. “Sure, this panel will start out above board. But there will always be that one person who will abuse their position and use us to do something that benefits them. All under the guise of the greater good. We will be nothing more than pawns to them.”

Kayla took a deep breath and exhaled, but Steve caught the barely discernible quiver of her lower lip. He stood up and placed a hand on her shoulder, grounding her from the spiral he knew her mind was in.

The room was silent for a moment before Tony spoke up, “If we don't do this now, it's gonna be done to us later. That's the fact.”

Kayla scoffed, “Well then, have fun being a lap dog to the United Nations. Count me out.” She spun on her heels, leaving the lounge.

She made it as far as the dormitory hallway before Steve caught up with her. “I don’t know if I can do this anymore Steve.” Kayla admitted, her voice low, her back still to him. “If an oversight panel is where this is headed…”

“I know.” Steve said softly, leaning against the wall opposite Kayla. “You’ve already made up your mind.”

Kayla turned to face him, her hands braced on her hips, nodding her head. “Yeah. I’m not gonna be an asset to anyone. Even if it means leaving behind everything I know…everything I am.” She leaned back against the wall, crossing her arms, her eyes glancing down at her boots.

“I understand exactly where you’re coming from, Kay.” Steve kept his eyes on her. “And that’s why I can’t sign them either.”

Kayla met Steve’s eyes, the corner of her lips curling up in a ghost of a smile. The silence settled between them. Something familiar, an unspoken understanding.

“Whatever happens.” Steve sighed, “we stick to what we believe in. That’s who we are.”

Kayla’s fingers flexed against her sleeve. “Yeah.” She agreed with a nod.

Summary - On their honeymoon in the Maldives, Steve and his pregnant wife swim with dolphins. One gentle dolphin rests against her belly, and the emotional moment brings her to tears as they’re told the dolphin is a new mother and has “kissed” their baby.

The sun hung low over the horizon, painting the sky in soft shades of peach and gold as the waves lapped gently against the shore. The Maldives had been Steve’s idea—quiet, warm, far from everything. A place where the world didn’t need Captain America. Just Steve. Just you.

And now… just the two of you. Well—three, really.

You adjusted the strap of your black bikini, glancing down at the gentle curve of your stomach. Twenty weeks. Still small enough that you sometimes forgot—until moments like this, when your hand instinctively rested there, protective, in awe.

Steve noticed, of course. He always noticed.

He stepped up beside you, his hand sliding into yours, thumb brushing over your knuckles. “You okay?” he asked softly, blue eyes searching your face like you were the most important mission he’d ever been given.

You smiled. “More than okay.”

Out in the water, sleek gray fins broke the surface, dolphins gliding effortlessly through the crystal-clear lagoon. The trainer waved you both forward.

“Ready?” Steve asked.

You nodded, squeezing his hand. “Ready.”

The water was warm as you waded in, sunlight dancing across the surface. The dolphins circled curiously, their movements graceful, almost playful. You laughed softly as one darted past, quick as a whisper.

Steve stayed close, one arm hovering near your back—not quite touching, but always there.

He turned to the trainer, his expression shifting into something more serious. “Hey—can I ask something?”

“Of course,” she said with a reassuring smile.

Steve gestured gently toward you. “She’s pregnant. Is this… safe?”

The trainer’s smile softened, understanding immediately. “Yes,” she said. “Perfectly safe. Dolphins are incredibly intuitive. They can actually sense pregnancy.”

You blinked. “Really?”

She nodded. “They use echolocation. They’re very aware of what’s going on inside the body. In fact… they tend to be especially gentle with expectant mothers.”

Steve looked back at you, something warm and almost awed in his expression. “See?” he murmured. “Told you they’d take care of you.”

Before you could respond, the water shifted.

One of the dolphins approached slowly, deliberately. Not darting or circling like the others—this one moved with purpose. Calm. Curious.

Your breath caught.

It came closer… and closer… until it was right in front of you.

Then, gently—so gently—you felt it.

Its rostrum rested against your belly.

You froze.

Time seemed to stop, the world narrowing to the soft pressure against your skin and the quiet rhythm of the ocean around you. Your hand instinctively moved to your stomach, fingers trembling as they hovered over the dolphin’s smooth, warm skin.

Your eyes filled before you even realized it.

“Oh my god…” you whispered.

Steve was beside you instantly, one hand bracing your back, the other coming to rest over yours. “Hey… hey,” he murmured, voice thick with emotion. “You okay?”

You nodded, tears spilling over anyway. “I think… I think it knows.”

The trainer stepped closer, her voice gentle, almost reverent. “She does,” she said. “That dolphin—she just became a mother herself.”

Your breath hitched.

The dolphin didn’t move. She stayed there, resting against you, as if listening… as if connecting.

With shaking fingers, you lowered your hand, brushing softly over her smooth skin.

“She’s saying hello,” the trainer added quietly. “To your baby.”

A tear slipped down your cheek, then another.

Steve pressed a kiss to your temple, his arm tightening around you. He didn’t say anything—he didn’t need to. You could feel it in the way he held you, the way his hand stayed over yours.

The dolphin shifted slightly, pressing just a little more firmly—then pulling back.

“That,” the trainer said softly, smiling, “was a kiss.”

You let out a small, broken laugh through your tears. “A kiss…”

Your hand stayed on your belly, your heart so full it almost ached.

Steve leaned his forehead against yours. “Guess our kid’s already making friends,” he murmured.

You smiled, tears still falling, but softer now.

“Yeah,” you whispered. “Yeah… they are.”

Summary - After two years together, you and Steve talk about having kids, but he reveals the super soldier serum makes it too dangerous—it could cost you your life. Though it breaks your heart, he makes it clear he does want a family, just not at the risk of losing you, and you both hold onto the idea of building a future together in a different way.

The apartment was quiet in that soft, late-evening way—New York humming faintly beyond the windows, the city never really sleeping, just breathing slower.

You were curled into Steve’s side on the couch, your head tucked beneath his chin, his arm wrapped around you like it had been made to fit there. Two years. Two years of this—of him learning how to be Steve again, and you learning how to live in a world that never stopped asking more of him.

The record player spun softly in the corner. A Taylor Swift song drifted through the room, something wistful and aching, the kind that made you think about futures that didn’t exist yet.

You tilted your head up slightly.

“Do you ever think about it?” you asked quietly.

Steve hummed. “Think about what?”

You hesitated. It felt fragile suddenly, like saying it out loud might break something.

“…Kids.”

His body went still.

It wasn’t obvious at first—just the slightest tightening of his arm around you, the faint pause in his breathing. But you knew him. You knew him.

You pulled back just enough to look at his face.

“Steve?”

He was staring ahead, jaw tight, eyes distant like he’d been pulled somewhere else entirely.

“I…” He swallowed. “Yeah. I think about it.”

Your heart lifted a little, hopeful.

“Yeah?”

A small, sad smile flickered across his face—but it didn’t reach his eyes.

“I always thought I’d have a big family,” he said quietly. “Back in Brooklyn. Thought I’d be a dad by now. Maybe two, three kids. A little house. Nothing special.”

You smiled softly. “You’d be a really good dad.”

That did something to him. You saw it—the way his expression cracked, just for a second.

“Hey…” you reached up, brushing your fingers along his cheek. “What is it?”

Steve closed his eyes briefly, leaning into your touch like he was steadying himself.

“It’s not that I don’t want that,” he said. His voice was low now, careful. “God, I do.”

Relief fluttered in your chest—too soon.

“I just…” He exhaled shakily. “I can’t.”

The words didn’t make sense at first.

“…Can’t?” you repeated.

He shook his head slightly. “Not the normal way. Not… safely.”

Your stomach dropped.

“What do you mean?”

Steve shifted, sitting up a little straighter, but he didn’t let go of your hand. If anything, he held on tighter.

“The serum,” he said. “What it did to me—it didn’t just make me stronger. It changed everything. My cells, my blood, my DNA… all of it.”

You felt the air thinning in your lungs.

“They don’t know exactly how it would pass on,” he continued, voice strained. “But they do know it wouldn’t be normal. A pregnancy wouldn’t be normal.”

Your chest tightened. “Steve…”

He looked at you then, and the fear in his eyes was enough to make your heart crack.

“It could hurt you,” he said. “Badly. Your body wouldn’t be able to handle it. The doctors—Banner, Stark—they’ve both said it’s too dangerous. The baby could…” He faltered, jaw clenching. “It could kill you.”

The room went silent except for the soft crackle of the record.

Your hand slipped slightly in his.

“Oh,” you whispered.

It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t dramatic. Just one small word—but it carried everything.

Steve’s grip tightened immediately. “Hey—hey, look at me.”

You tried. You really did. But your vision blurred, tears spilling before you could stop them.

“I didn’t know,” you said, voice shaking. “I just thought—maybe someday—”

“I know.” His voice broke. “I know, sweetheart. I should’ve told you sooner.”

You shook your head, wiping at your face, but it didn’t help. “No, it’s not—it’s not about that, I just…” You laughed weakly through the tears. “I had this picture in my head, you know? You with a little girl who looks just like you, and—”

Steve pulled you into him before you could finish, holding you so tightly it almost hurt.

“I think about that too,” he murmured into your hair. “All the time.”

That made it worse.

Your fingers clutched at his shirt. “It’s not fair.”

“I know.”

“It’s not fair that you don’t get that,” you whispered. “That we don’t get that.”

Steve pressed his lips to the top of your head, lingering there.

“I would never risk you,” he said softly. “Not for anything. Not even that.”

You squeezed your eyes shut.

“I don’t want you to have to choose,” you said.

“I’m not choosing,” he replied gently. “You are the choice. You always have been.”

That made your chest ache in a completely different way.

You pulled back just enough to look at him again. His eyes were glassy now too, though he was trying to hide it like he always did.

“…Do you regret it?” you asked quietly. “Being with me, knowing that—”

“No.” The answer was immediate. Firm. Unshakable.

“Never.”

He cupped your face in both hands, thumbs brushing away your tears.

“Listen to me,” he said. “There are a lot of ways to have a family. This—this doesn’t mean we don’t get one. It just means it might look different than we imagined.”

You searched his face. “You’d still want that? Even if it’s not… ours?”

A soft smile finally reached his eyes this time—sad, but real.

“Anything that’s ours is ours,” he said. “Doesn’t matter how it happens.”

Your breath hitched.

“And if you don’t want that,” he added gently, “if this changes things for you, I—”

You cut him off, shaking your head, grabbing his wrists.

“No. Don’t. Don’t say that.”

“Hey—”

“I’m not going anywhere,” you said, voice steadier now, even with tears still falling. “I didn’t fall in love with you because of some future that might happen. I fell in love with you.”

Something in his expression softened completely then, like a wall finally giving way.

He pulled you back into his arms, slower this time, more careful—like you were something fragile he needed to protect.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

You shook your head against his chest.

“We’ll figure it out,” you said softly. “Okay?”

Steve held you closer, his chin resting against your hair.

“Yeah,” he murmured. “We will.”

The record clicked as it reached the end, the soft hum filling the silence again.

And even though the future didn’t look the way you’d imagined anymore, you stayed right there in his arms—holding onto something just as real, just as strong.

Something that wasn’t broken.

Just… different.
