Imagine a world where everyone is happy. Partying every day, that's life. At sixteen, all citizens have surgery making their immaculately beautiful. But there's a catch: Your brain is changed. You would be rendered unable to form complex thoughts. Welcome to the world of 'Uglies' by Scott Westerfield, the Earth a few hundred years in the future. In this epic saga covered in Uglies, Pretties, and Specials, Tally Youngblood must stop the reign of terror in which people are transformed into doll with brains ... that are compromised. It has been hinted, through the perspective of Tally, this surgery is erroneous. In the conclusion of the series, it reverses the process and everyone now has free will. As a reading pleasure, I still wonder, what happened to everyone in this world is it really bad? To be happy is not that all that matters? Whether it is an illusion or not, it is still happiness. According to another perspective of the author, which was suggested by another character who said, "Humanity is a cancer that will destroy the world. "We have seen the truth in these words when the 'rusties', people now, (as the story was set in the future). we destroy ourselves by deforestation, pollution, etc. So what do you think? Brain surgery for the welfare of humanity? What is happiness? What is freedom? What is truth?
