He used to. Fate that is. He believed in somethings that happened because someone upstairs in heaven planned so. Believed someone that won the lottery was a person filled to the brim with luck. Losing his sister made him believe that was all utter fucking bullshit. He wasn’t unlucky for losing his sister, it wasn’t fate that she died. It was a decision made by a person. A person with a free will that chose to do what he did.
Yes, if someone would ask him about his loved ones. He would say it was luck that he found them. But inside he would just blame life. Life made him find them, not luck nor fate.
