"What the Wind Knows" by Amy Harmon
"What the Wind Knows" is unlike anything I have ever read. Let me preface this review by saying that I have my undergraduate degree in history, and I am not a huge fan of historical fiction. I doubt that if I read historical fiction from anyone other than Amy Harmon, that I would be left a satisfied reader. "What the Wind Knows" is based in Ireland and is set in the last years of the Irish Revolution. I don't know a lot about Irish history, so I won't speak to its total accuracy, but this story is one to be told, nonetheless. It's a pure blend of romance, mystery, and unavoidable heartbreak. Amy Harmon plunges the reader into a world they wouldn't know they wished to go until they've been there. That was the case for me, anyway. In reading this book, I was terrified by the circumstances in which Anne found herself, confused by how she got there, in love with the sweet doctor whose guard she was under, and heartbroken by where the author would take her next - as there was an unavoidable truth that needed to be spoken throughout the book that would change the fate of everyone involved. Amy Harmon outdid herself with this work. It was beautiful and perfect, and made me feel every emotion that I think one could possibly feel. Even if you are not a fan of historical fiction, read this book. You will learn things you may not have known and feel things that, I guarantee, you have never felt before. Do your heart, and your mind, a favor.
