DM: You can decide whether you have been travelling together for a while or if this party is a more recent thing.
Marijn (playing Winnifred): I'd like to have just joined up in the last week. Not know anyone very well.
Andy (playing Diardi): Me too.
Lyra (playing Hesty): I thought we'd have been together a little while and I designed Hesty with that in mind.
DM: Both can work, there are a lot of you. A core few characters and then a few who joined up later.
Rach (playing Gregor): I had the idea that Gregor decided that the fastest way to understand more about humanoid races would be to join a club that suited xyr interests - so a mechanics club or something - and that could be how xey met Hesty.
Lyra: I could work with that.
Adam (playing Harriet): I'll tag along with you two for a while before we meet the others.
Andy: I've been imagining that when there are a group of you hanging out in some tavern or other, Diardi reluctantly comes up and says, "Hi, my spirit companion wants me to meet people or whatever and you look like adventurers, so can I come with you for a bit?" and is beyond astonished when someone says okay.
Lyra: Love it.
Andy: Diardi really doesn't like this change in life direction that's come with having a spirit companion attached to them and isn't adjusting super well to it. They communicate telepathically with the spirit but sometimes they forget and just snap at it out loud, so if they say something mean it's probably not to any of you.
Lyra: ...This is going to go excellently.
DM: As you’re fighting the faceless attackers, several giant rats creep from the corners of the room.
Adam (playing Harriet): Just what we need!
DM: They’re about the size of corgis. Almost as big as WA.
M (playing WA): Bring. It. On.
DM: They’re going to scurry forward and attack Hesty, Diardi's spirit rock Whatu, and Hunter.
Lyra (playing Hesty): Since the faceless aren’t attacking me I’m going to decide they’re not a threat and just focus on the rats.
Andy (playing Diardi): They may not be a threat to you but we could use some help!
Lyra: Just pull out a light! They won’t attack you if you’ve got light!
Hamish (playing Hunter): Can I hop up on the workbench so the rat can’t reach me?
DM: Yes.
Hamish: Awesome, then I grab this faceless guy and I’m going to drag him along the bench, bar-fight style.
DM: Love it. Stuff goes everywhere.
Andy (playing Diardi): Diardi is a World Speaker shaman so their spirit companion is literally a piece of earth. They’re called Whatu which means ‘stone’ in te reo Māori.
DM: Are we talking like a bit of floating turf-
Marijn (playing Winnifred): *snickers* thought you were going to say a different 4-letter word that starts with ‘tur’.
Hamish (playing Hunter): Same.
DM: Like, a tiny floating island? Or-
Andy: It’ll be easier if I find you a picture.
DM: Or is it something anthropomorphised?
Andy: It’ll be easier if I find you a picture.
DM: Okay.
