Nancy didn’t mean to wake anyone, she really didn’t. She’d been working so hard to keep quiet through the night. The nights she snuck out to go looking in the woods (she still wasn’t sure what for.) The nights when she couldn’t sleep at all and puttered around her room and the house, cleaning away any sign of her former best friend, and after that, the young girl who’d lived there in secret for a week, save the fort in the basement. The nights when the nightmares got too big and too loud. She always tried to turn over as soon as she realized she was asleep, smother her screams. She hadn’t done a good enough job that night. 

Her mother’s arms curling around her on her only made her recoil, thinking of the tight space left to crawl through, trying to get back to her own world. She pushed back against the framing of her bed, eyes shutting tight, blocking out the shadows of the creature reaching for her. “It’s nothing.” the words came too quick for the searching eyes Nancy felt on her face. It’s nothing. Nothing that can be explained. Nothing that can be rationalized. Nothing that can be accepted. Nothing that she can talk about. It’s nothing because if she tried to explain the nightmares she’s only make them worse. nothing because that only thing worse than being stuck in a dream was having to recount it when she woke. nothing, because she couldn’t do that to her mom.
