Demonic Fel had a certain heat about it, it made the air feel thick and heavy. Clustered into camps, the very earth underneath their feet dead, the grotesque creatures worked endlessly on their war machine.
Ke’lanna carefully wiped a bit of sweat from her temple before it slid down her cheek, her mind focused on counting the weapons she could see from her perch on the cliffs. Down on her belly, she peered over just enough to see the corner it appeared a cannon was being pieced together. The small unit she was assigned to had followed the shipment of materials to this camp and was tasked with monitoring and mapping the camp. Dusty, hot and exhausted, she slid down the rocky slope, till she landed near her companions. The two of them sat looking equally useless, one scribbling a very poor excuse for a map the other staring out into the nether daydreaming. Eyeing the map she would surely have to remake herself that night, she debated on asking the questions she already knew the answers to.
“It will be dark soon, let’s go back.”
As expected the dreamer sat staring, having completely tuned out the rest of world somehow, even with the pressure of danger all around them. She stood, nudging him with her boot toe.
“Why are you here, you should be at the camp prepping food.”
He blinked, a bit startled by her nudge and then turned his face finally, mumbling something she couldn’t quite make out.
She huffed in disgust, turning sharply to start her descent from the cliffs. While she did understand that she was being placed with fellow new recruits, their lackadaisical attitudes and complete incompetence infuriated her. The pride of her home that burned inside her was completely absent from the two men, who did not even seem concerned by the very serious state of the world.
Making her way down at a swift pace, her breaths deepened to breathe in the cleaner air the closer she got to the forest edge. As the camp came into sight it was all she could do not to scream in frustration. The fire had gone out, their small items they had brought were in disarray and something had halfway knocked down one of their tents. Not for the first time she wondered by she bothered to pretend to take turns at maintaining the camp each day when it ended up being her anyway.
It only took a moment of rifling through a tent to find the small bow and quiver they kept for simple hunting. Her stomach rumbled as she glanced over to her sword and heavier armor, but impatience pushed her forward and Ke’lanna patted the dagger strapped tightly to her thigh as reassurance. Dusk was still early and a rabbit or two should come easily enough...
