"but it was a certain commission in 2018 that sent things stratospheric. Meghan Markle, then an American actress and Prince Harry’s girlfriend, was a fan of Violet, even having interviewed Ptak for her (now defunct) lifestyle blog, The Tig. A fitting match for the marriage of a British prince and his California-born bride, Harry and Meghan commissioned Ptak to create their Royal Wedding cake. ‘It was really wild,’ she recalls. ‘They sort of told me, “Look, this is going to be a big deal. Make sure you’re ready. When we announce this, you’re going to get a lot of interest.” And I was like, “okay”… I just thought it’d be fine. And I was really wrong.’ Violet became ‘so crazy busy… it was exciting, for sure.’

Ptak reflects that the commission was especially ‘validating’ because typically with wedding cakes, the couple is seeking to realise something ‘they’ve dreamed up.’ In this instance, however, ‘Meghan, she specifically said to me, “I don’t want to tell you what to do… the reason why I’ve chosen you is because I love your baking and your work and your point of view and your ethos”... and I was like, “oh my god, that’s so cool. The best job brief ever!”’ Ptak created six options for the couple, ‘and they did the tastings… and they picked the lemon and elderflower, which was my first choice as well.’ Featuring Amalfi lemons and elderflower syrup from the late Queen’s Sandringham estate, the multi-tiered extravaganza was decorated with Swiss meringue buttercream and 150 fresh flowers. ‘Making them in the Buckingham Palace kitchens [a process that took five days] and then serving it up in Windsor Castle… It was awesome,’ says Ptak, ‘I loved it.’ Immortalised in the book as Lemon and Elderflower Wedding Cake, the recipe comes with the warning: ‘not for the beginner!’ Harry and Meghan turned to Ptak once again to make Princess Lilibet’s first birthday cake last summer, while they were visiting the UK for the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Meghan's beautiful bouquet was featured this evening in a short video shared across the Royal Family's social media, ahead of Remembrance Sunday tomorrow.

Meghan, like her mother and grandmother in law before her, sent her bouquet the day after her wedding to be placed on the grave of the Unknown Warrior at Westminster Abbey, to honour the fallen.
