Re: leaning Spanish; my friend from college likes to say she knows Spanish (and got a minor in it) but she 100% used google translate for everything. && at the university I work at, we had to add "in Spanish" to the exit exam requirement in the bachelor description bc so many students were surprised the EXIT EXAM was in SPANISH. Like....I guess they just expected to get a degree in something they can't speak?? Anyway I really enjoyed reading your views on the topic.
Lol, well, I’m glad someone did!
Like I’m not an expert in all the cultural dimensions of Spanish speaking in the US, but as a sort-of native speaker (Spanish is technically my first language) who actually did take Spanish as an elective through middle and high school because I wanted to achieve a level of fluency that just speaking it to my parents didn’t get me, I…have a complicated relationship with white people learning Spanish.
I mean once it was available I took Spanish for Spanish Speakers, and then AP Spanish Lit & Language, but like, yeesh, those were some interesting three/four years before.
