fun fact the costume designer for true detective was going to dress everyone in the 1995 scenes in the sort of bulkier, looser-fit menswear that was more on trend at the time but not for mconagaghuehey bc a. rust wouldn't care about trends and b. dude's too hot to cover up like that

that IS a fun fact!! and both those reasons are DEEPLY VALID and very important. rust’s style is very utilitarian. it gets the job done based on what the job is and what role he has to play and where his head’s at. in 1995 he actually gave a shit about his job and he dressed like how, i assume, he thinks detectives ought to. by 2012 he is fully out of shits to give and so his clothes just drown him. but as he gets involved with marty again, his clothes start to get nicer (and tighter) and that’s... a very rewarding sight.
