↳ 22. ...in a rush of adrenaline.
The air she was gulping down still felt like acid against her lungs, reminding her that she was alive, that they were alive. “Holy shit,” she panted and not for the first time. “Holy shit! Did that really just happen?” It took her another couple of gulps before she was able to straighten, body bent, hands resting on her knees. “Did you see me hit that creature with the branch? And you, Mauri, holy shit, you were AMAZING!” Not very many people would react in such a way to a near-death experience, and perhaps it was simply the adrenaline speaking, but Fox’s eyes glittered when she looked upon her roommate, her friend. Genuinely in awe of the power that she seemed to exhibit. “What you did with those telephone lines--I’m still not even sure I understand, but I bet that creature won’t be bothering anyone for a while.” Again, her words were punctuated by deep breaths of air.
They had run, scrambled really, for the way back through to their world, their reality. Fox hardly saw their brightly lit world, it could’ve been the weird, grey, dust-filled one for all she knew as her focus was only on Mauri. Perhaps it always had been. Lungs still not adjusted, they nearly BURST at her next movement. She embraced her friend, holding her somewhat clammy hands on either side of Mauri’s face as she pulled her in for...for a completely unexpected kiss. Maybe it was the awe or maybe it was the adrenaline giving her the confidence for such a forward action, either way, Fox pulled away just as quickly as she had approached. Repeating her favored, “holy shit,” though this time the letters were not filled with awe, but worry.
