The Joke
I heard a joke once,
Just some painted, jealous dummies.
It all started for the money.
But we bought stickers, made it sunny.
Not long after
I heard it again.
Comedic gems sewn in by men, all cloud my brain as I push ten.
But I was trying to make friends.
Went quiet for a couple years until Ms. Rowling gave me powers.
So what if magic stole my hours?
I never understood the Towers…
I stewed for much too long in life thinking of how the land I occupied was stolen.
And that the Holocaust was recent and the shame from Hiroshima was open.
Imagine if your land of free only yesterday broke your chains,
Imagine if the life of men was valued more than pocket gains.
You cannot go from owning people then grimace out of feigned respect.
And to think you were shocked by Sterling,
his money powers lives, direct.
Some may say I’m rather crazy or I’m just much too intense.
But why should I play the ignorant role?
I have no need for a defence.
I simply wish to live my life as more than just my skin,
And laugh and love without the burden of my life as filthy sin.
I knew that it was just a joke, I probably could’ve found delight.
But this joke controls too much of life, a laugh that borders wrong from right.
This joke that made my mother strong, iron cast in the ring of fire,
The joke that kept my daddy gone, and left a child without desire.
The joke that embarrassed me at the university,
The joke that blinded potential employers from her genius capabilities.
The joke that once limited friends, is now limiting ends,
and since others are unfunny, they must try dictate when we end.
A joke founded on a lie, for the purpose of cheap labour,
a century later, no longer slaves but still needing to beg favours?
No longer friday, but the thirteenth amendment has me shaken,
They pick and stick from bail to jailhouse, and round ‘em up in pens for bacon.
Why is it in the rural south, booze is a fifty minute drive?
yet once you hit the city, bondsmen clutter three to five?
Maybe I’m being petty, it depends on the location,
Though ain't it strange with all that money, New York’s homeless flock the stations?
And is it strange that they use styrofoam to base tenements in Queens,
And if this is what our money buys,
Is this us living past our means?
We are the ones who break our backs
all for just a loan,
so tell me of your struggle dear, pardon if I groan.
Too many wouldn’t dare step down
to see the homes I’ve lived,
How is it that with all these things
it seems the saints have naught to give.
But do not tell me that with all you have
you weep in earnest that you have it.
I see your eyes when I walk by,
you clutch your bag in case I grab it.
So do not drown me in your tears of guilt
nor waste my time to mend your joke,
Just watch your mouth and and act right now,
for you alone can match your hopes.
The internet is a wonderful resource of free and unlimited knowledge. For people to be this ignorant about others, really is nothing short of laziness.
So you can download a bunch of songs for free and watch your favourite movies yet you can't take the time to figure out why your so-called "opinions" are problematic?
I've realized that if people wanted to educate themselves, they would. I'm starting to believe that people actually LIKE holding onto these views because by believing them they are allowed, if only for a second, to believe that they are on a higher moral standing than someone else.
NEWSFLASH: You're not. So grow up.
Thinking your humanity is more deserving of fair treatment and respect due to:
Gender (regardless of promiscuous, frigidity, conventional beauty or otherwise)
Age (children and elderly people are treated like shit and its disgusting)
Mental wellness (I think if more people were educated on mental health, we would find that there is a much higher concentration of it in all societies than we currently believe)
Physical disability (self explanatory, I would hope at least)
Sexuality (don't even bring up religion, because the last time I checked someone else's personal choices is not going to prevent YOU from entering your heavenly afterlife; just mind your business and move along)
Skin colour (there aren't even races anymore; unless people are still actually going around calling themselves Caucasoids, Negroids, and Mongoloid)
Financial standing (if having money makes you better than someone else, if you were to lose your money would you also lose your value?)
Please do not use religion/culture as a defence to treat others poorly or to make decisions that can negatively affect a life that is not yours.
*********STOP DESTROYING THE LIVES OF REAL PEOPLE NOW JUST FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF ANOTHER LIFE LATER.*********
I'm not even religious but I think the saying 'do unto others as you would have them do onto you' pretty much captures what I'm trying to say. OR:
JUST DON'T BE A DICK.
Note: I do not think I'm better than anyone for my disgust for any of the above ideologies. I've merely been victim to too many of these views to allow myself to stomach silence for the rest of my life. I too can fuck up and make a mistake (and please let me know if I do), but its the ability to try to change that mistake that will make the difference between an arrogant asshole who will continue making the same mistakes and a person who owns up to their mistakes and work hard to never make that mistake again.
As far as I know, human perfection does not yet exist, but until we are willing to try to better ourselves, we will never find out if it can.
Every human life is worth the effort. Every human life has value.
Not like other black people...
