Stanhope Nixon is a prominent mobster with an empire built on bootlegging and speakeasies. Lewis is like spoiled royalty who can get away with anything and often takes advantage of that fact. He drinks too much, drives his car too fast, and sleeps around like it’s going out of style.
Enter Dick Winters, FBI agent extraordinaire, one of the many agents trying to break up the mob’s hold on NYC. It’s not hard for him to bump into Nix, and it’s not even hard for him to keep bumping into him, but Nix turns out to be a tough nut to crack. It doesn’t seem like there’s any love lost between him and his father, but he’s not going to roll over and just hand Dick the keys to bringing him down.
Of course, Dick is inexplicably drawn to the guy. He may be a rogue, but he’s kind of a lovable rogue. And there’s something to be said for his loyalty to his family, even in the face of the minor threats Dick makes. Dick doesn’t intend to actually throw Nix in jail, but he certainly has enough on him that he could, if he wanted to. And if he wasn’t, you know, falling in love with him.
One day there’s a shootout between some of Stanhope’s people and the cops, and Nix is caught in the crossfire. He ends up in the hospital, and after that, in jail. Dick has a decision to make. He could break Nix out. He could burn the reports and make it look like he was never there. He and Nix could run away to California and...well, he doesn’t know what, but he thinks Nix might.
It takes hours of wrestling with his conscience, but he shows up at the police station in the middle of the night and busts Nix out. They may not make it out of New York. They may go out in a blaze of glory. But somehow Dick doesn’t care.
