“They didn’t hang you there, you can walk away.” The messenger spoke was clearly, but Cullen was another world away, fingers digging into the oak wood of the shelf in front of him. His breathing was uneven, his eyes squeezed shut as he tried to pull himself from the memories of the Circle Tower. He couldn’t focus exactly on what the words meant, because he was too lost in the memories and he was struggling to pull himself back out. But the messenger didn’t seem to notice as she continued to read.
“Uldred marked you but didn't make you, you stayed you.” He swallowed hard, finding his voice, but it sounded strange, not like himself. “Of course he did. You’re dismissed.” He could see it all again, every second of his time in the Circle, everything that happened in that tower and the abominations that had come from it. It had scarred him and left him a different person. He’d tried to face those demons and drown them, but he couldn’t do it. He heard the footsteps of the messenger leaving and he ran his fingers through his hair, leaning into the shelf because he felt like his legs might give out. He hadn’t heard Uldred’s name spoken in so long, he tried to keep it from his memory. What was Cole getting at? Did he think this was funny or some kind of game? No...the boy wasn’t like that, he didn’t know any better.
But the words...you stayed you...they replayed in his mind. Was he still the same man he had been before everything had fallen apart? He wasn’t sure, he didn’t feel like that man. He just didn’t know anymore. Swiping his hands over his face, he realized he wasn’t alone in the room and he jumped slightly, though he quickly realized who was standing in the doorway. “Inquisi- Ellie, sorry. I didn’t know you were there.”
