06. — trusted

“Did I hurt you?” he practically snarls it and hates himself the moment he does. 

But there is such panic—such raw, ugly panic in his chest. It tears through everything else that he is; all the good and the bad and the broken because what if he hurt you. What if he hurt the one good thing he’s managed to find? 

Every day he lives with it—with the knowledge that he doesn’t deserve you, that you could do so much better than him. After all the lives he’s taken, innocent and otherwise, what could you possibly want with a murderer?  

Cold sweat coats his skin, loose strands of hair sticking to his forehead and he feels almost sickly because if he hurt you—

Your fingers are soothing against his, careful and gentle, as if not to scare him and if that isn’t a hilarious concept. As if he couldn’t break you with half a thought—

And that’s part of his nightmares. A neverending nightmare in which Hydra makes him hurt you over and over again. 

“I’m fine, James,” you soothe, and lean closer, watching his expression and letting him see your own composed features. “You didn’t hurt me. You’re fine. Hey, look at me. I’m okay.”

But he can’t. Shame sits heavy and sour in his chest, its dark sting spreading through his limbs like poison. He tackled you, pinned you to the wall like some animal, his fingers ready to crush your windpipe, ready to kill—

Your hand reaches out and your fingers flatten against the skin of his cheek. His breath shudders out of his chest, his shoulders drooping and eyes fluttering shut at the contact. Your touch, as always, is an anchor; refuge and comfort all at once, and that resentful voice inside his head hisses at him that he doesn’t deserve it.

“I’m sorry—” he croaks out, shivering, but selfishly leans into your touch despite it. Into that promise of love and care that you give unconditionally. “I frightened you.”

You sigh and smooth your thumb over his brow and his expression strains, his fingers flexing. “Yeah,” you admit softly and he feels that admittance pierce his heart, shred it to pieces. “But I wasn’t scared of you. I was scared for you. Why didn’t you tell me that it’s getting worse again?”

Because it comes and goes. The peaceful days—since you even weeks, months —are so precious and wonderful he forgets about the bad days. But when they hit, they hit like a hurricane, leaving only devastation behind. He hates them. Because they feel like a weakness, like a flaw, like he can’t overcome it no matter how hard he tries. 

“I—”

He doesn’t know what to say. 

“Oh, James,” you whisper sadly, and ever so carefully lean your forehead against his. Your fingers are still against his cheek but he knows that you’ll give him space the moment he asks for it. “No matter how bad it gets, I trust you, okay? Always. I don’t scare so easy, handsome.”

But you should. You should run and never look back. Should never want or care for a shell of a monster no matter how repentant. 

“I don’t deserve you,” he breathes into space between you, strained and low. “I don’t.”  

“Hey, have you met me? I’m a mess,” you joke, trying to lighten the mood and he could kiss you for trying alone. “Let’s be messes together. What do you say?”

He blinks up at you, his throat dry but presses your foreheads closer together, breathing you in. “Okay.”     

As if he could deny you anything.
