people often believe that latinos can’t be racist because we’re all placed as minorities in the u.s census but that’s obviously not the case. latinos in the u.s includes a variety of ethnicities, races, and religions. while brown, black, and other marginalized latinos in the u.s don’t hold the systemic power to be racist, that doesn’t mean that white/white passing latinos can’t. white latinos and latinos of fair skin have always played into the colonial racial hierarchy of society and still do. latinos especially those who live in latin america love to believe that racism isn’t an issue because their countries don’t focus so much on race in the media compared to the U.S. however, white latinos in latin america still hold the majority of the power in elite spaces such as the government and academia. anti-blackness and discrimination towards smaller minority groups such as asians in latin america are unfortunately very common. this post was kinda messy but i just feel like this is a conversation to be held.

Can we talk about white Latines calling themselves PoC again? Because this is something that is perpetuated by white Anglos as well. All the time. Even in politically active circles. I've had to tell multiple people that all the shit that they do up here we have perpetuated down in Cuba and in Latine circles in the US.

So for anyone who is unaware, Latine isn’t a race. I know in the US (and probably other Western countries) it’s seen as such, usually depicting people with light brown to bronze skin, dark hair, and brown eyes as the “typical” Latine person.

But that’s inaccurate.

Latine just means that you or your heritage comes from Latin America and there are people of every race and shade living there, including white/Europeans.

People who don’t watch Telemundo or Univision might not realize this because they don’t see it, but white Latines are just like whites in the US: privileged af and The Representation there. White Latines do NOT face racism, because they are white. In the US/West, they can face xenophobia. It’s similar, but not the same.

Now, being white does NOT make you less Latine!

It simply means that you are a Latine with European heritage and, therefore, NOT a POC. Which does mean that you should defer to those who are of color when it comes to conversations on racial discrimination. Trying to talk over the rest of us is, well, a dick move. It’s not different than a non-Latine person talking over Latines in a conversation about our community.

More Cuban-Americans ID as white than members of any other Latinx group in the US, and it’s no surprise why: not only are most of them actually of primarily if not exclusively Spanish/Italian/French ancestry (unambiguously - they look it), but Cubans overall have also received the best treatment of any Latinx group by the American government. We were welcomed with lax restrictions as a symbolic gesture against communism. Wealthy (mainly white) Cubans could immediately take a position of privilege in American society even before Cubans formed a demographic majority (and powerful political caucus) in Miami. A disproportionate number of the Latinxs ever elected to US Senate were/are Cubans, even though there are under 2,000,000 of us in this country (nowhere near the Mexican population). Mayor Gimenez not giving a fuck about immigrants who aren’t Cuban is disgusting but also not a surprise to me at all.

As a Brazilian white latina, with European features, can I wear hoop earrings? I saw an article talking about how hoop earrings are a part of black and latin culture, so if white people use it, it's cultural appropriation. So I'm confused if I can wear it or not. Also, I'm not a person of color right? Thanks for your time :)

So hoop earrings in and of themselves aren’t appropriation. At least your everyday, run-of-the-mill hoops aren’t. As for the bamboo-styled ones or the ones with name and words in them are the ones that are more specific to black/latina women. The giant ones, I feel, straddle that fence.

Now, as for you personally, you are Brazilian and therefore, latina. So if you want to wear your hoops, wear them. As a usual disclaimer, be sure you use your privilege to call out people who praise how you look, but put down black and brown women for wearing them or make “ghetto/hood” jokes about them. That would be the only thing I would ask of you as a white person.

And right, as a white Brazilian, you would not be considered a Person of Color.

The sensation of being left out, of being told they're not "Latino enough" has led many white Latinos to pen op-eds and think pieces about their experiences.

Some of you may have undoubtedly noticed that the majority of "no one believes me when I say I'm Latinx because of how I look" thinkpieces focus on people who are white-passing. As someone who thusly qualifies, let me say that, sure, it sucks to have people not recognize you for what you are, but at the end of the day, being "mistake" for a member of a privileged group doesn't really make your life worse (I'd argue it's kept me from having a lot of bad experiences that people who don't look white have on a regular basis, so while I may sometimes wish my skin was darker or my hair was more like my mom's out of my subjective aesthetic preferences, my appearance has probably made my life easier in some ways than what it could have been had genetic behaved differently) and you certainly aren't lacking representation. Latin American media is full of blonde-haired, blue-eyed people with Ukranian surnames, so it's not as if "white-looking" people are somehow rejected in Latin American society. This article by an Afrolatina Puerto Rican explains her own experiences and frustrations with these "boo-hoo, people think I'm a member of this group that probably leads me to being treated better as a whole" thinkpieces.

i'm sorry but what the hell does it mean that penelope cruz has a latin look?????? penelope cruz looks like a typical girl from around the locations of spain\the south of france\portugal. she looks european white and the latinos that look like her do so because they're white. the stereotypical latino looks part native and she doesn't so how could can she have a latin look? it's also quite misinforming to state that there is a latin look...your discluding many latinos when you say stuff like that

Yeah, you’re right. She looks that way because she is white - she was born in Spain to Spanish parents.

There are mixed Latinxs that look like her, too, just because there’s more Spanish or some other Euro in their ancestry than anything else (or because of weird genetic randomness). Those mixed people still have all the privilege in Latin America anyway (and loads of privilege here in the US).

I mean... this is why I hate “Latin” or even “Latinx” as a descriptor: Latin is European. Europeans and super light Latin Americans were the ones that decided our whole continent should be called “Latin America.” So yeah... Latin looks are white looks. Latin America is a white supremacist place, they just give more leeway to mixed people who are light/white enough.

But yeah, the whole concept of “Latin looks” is gross. No one in Latin America looks like anybody else. Did I reblog something praising Penelope Cruz? If I did, I must not have noticed it said something like that. Show me the thing.

actually it's true most guajiros ARE white, but some of them descended from spaniards mixing with spaniards and influenced the guajiro culture but the vast majority of guajiro culture started with the spanish peasants who were invited to cuba in order to settle and whiten the island, the identity wasn't solidified until the rural whites of cuba dominated it and made it their own. basically most of them are white but they appropriate mestizo culture or assimialte to it whatever youd prefer..
