🇳🇱 "I hacked the Dutch Government and all I got was this lousy T-shirt"! This fantastic T-shirt (and the accompanying letter) is a reward for ethical hackers - all part of a genius initiative by the Dutch Government's National Cyber Security Centre to strengthen the Government's digital defences. They've literally rolled out a red carpet and invited ethical hackers to spot and report cyber vulnerabilities across Dutch Government websites and services. Their Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure (CPD) programme is a golden ticket for 'white hat hackers' to make the digital Netherlands safer, one bug at a time. "Ethical hackers" or "white hat hackers", are individuals who use their skills to protect and secure digital systems, networks, and data, rather than exploiting them for malicious intent. They often work to identify vulnerabilities and weaknesses in systems, much like a cyber criminal might, but they do so in order to fix these issues and strengthen defenses, not to cause harm. Political Engagement

This weeks learning focused on politics and the internet and as such, we looked into just how our Governments use and interact with the internet. The senate in Australia has recently passed legislation that will allow the Government to censor websites they consider to contain illegal content and also allows for the retention of our data for up to 8 months (Habert, 2015). This censorship, which is being marketed by the government as a means to protect children, borders on the surveillance on Australia’s citizen’s, so much so, that we are at risk of becoming a nanny state. Now I’m not saying that internet surveillance is necessarily a bad thing. If it stops a paedophile ring or a terrorist attack, I am all for it, however, I fear that the government will use the information that it gathers on people to create trumped up charges. As a democratic nation, we should not have to live in fear that our every move is being monitored.

On the flipside, we looked at Wikileaks, which I believe is a force of good in the world, keeping the governments accountable to their citizens. Wikileaks and it’s creator Julian Assange have been accused of illegal activity and putting lives at risk, despite much evidence to the contrary (Robinson & Ungerer, 2011). The governments of the world are merely embarrassed to be on the other side of the surveillance camera and have their secrets made available for anyones perusal. 

There is some light on the horizon however, as we can see how governments and the people can work together to create a safer (online) environment for all. White-Hat hackers assist governments to protect their information, showing them where their weak spots in an increasingly online work environment lie and helping them to remedy these issues (Thomas, 2005).
