I played a White Suns record in the car once and the person riding shotgun I had inflicted it upon asked "Is this one of those bands where we listen to the notes they're not playing?" It was a good gag but the reality is the complete inverse. This is not music for the impatient or the content. That record is one of the most intense records I have ever listened to - last years Waking In The Reservoir. As a result of this intensity I think I've listened to it a total of about three times front to back. These songs won't get stuck in your head or demand you return to them - they are all about the immediate listening experience which ultimately is a clusterfuck of very angry noise. But you don't forget it quickly. It's hard to find a time appropriate to listen to the White Suns, they demand a certain respect, but when you give it that respect with an open mind it can be a far more rewarding experience than most other crap.
They're back again with a new record called Sinews and although the music is at times slightly more consumable than that on Reservoir, it's still all about being trapped in some sort of morbid sound torture. "Cenote" is probably their finest cut yet, it's a micro example of how they normally operate over a full record packed into a single track that also could qualify as their most sickeningly fucked up. These guys are a lot to handle however you look at them but if you hate the new Men album because it's a mere baby sister of Leave Home (yet everyone thinks it's better, what's with that?) give the White Suns a chance. If you've just married your high school sweetheart and think the new M83 album is life changing, don't bother.
