ghghgh i just saw an extremely condescending post about how the solution to whitewashed art is to just color pick from the official art and i’m offended from the bottom of my artist heart lmfao

racists in fandom need to actually look with their own eyeballs at what the fuck theyre doing, think about and address their racism, and do so much better than they are right now. that’s not an optional effort, everyone who draws whitewashed art should realize their racism and stop doing that! and if they really, truly, worked out that garbage, then they should be able to draw non-whitewashed art without resorting to color picking

i feel like saying “just color pick” isn’t useful because

racists will be racist, find whitewashed/funky colors official art or an overexposed scene and use this as their excuse. racists dont stop being racist without their active effort not to be, and this isn’t it

color picking is extremely limiting to an artist, and setting that as a standard means discouraging ppl (incl nonwhites) to actually go and experiment and learn about how to properly draw skin and look at and study real skin like they should be. whitewashing =/= not using the exact tone a character has in official art

which is a skin tone that human beings do sometimes have. you don't have to edit it to make it realistic. it's not like she's purple or something you can just draw her human with this same skin tone, that she has in canon, and which humans sometimes have. please stop whitewashing her i keep seeing shit like this:

i genuinely don’t see how there’s any excuse for whitewashing characters whose skin tones are known in art??

like... every art program, even fucking ms paint, has a colour picker tool. every single one. it is one of the most basic of tools, and it’s incredibly easy to use. and every single computer that you’d actually use is capable of copy + paste. it is so simple to get a reference into your art program and then use that to get the right skin tone.

and a lot of the time, people use those references to see how costumes or outfits or other details work so they can draw them better. so you’re using the references anyway! don’t try to eyeball the skin tone, there’s no point. it’s not somehow bad artistic practise to get the right fucking colour!

also, i see people getting every single colour right except for the skin tone. they get clothes, eye colour, hair colour, but not the skin. that HAS to be on purpose at that point, because it clearly shows you can either use the colour picker or eyeball well enough for the colours to look accurate. so... why is the skin tone so pale? there is only one reason and that’s that you’re racist.

there is no excuse for it. NONE. so stop fucking doing it.
