Trying out the cooperative campaign mode for Hero Realms. I’ve had this forever but we’ve only got around to trying it now that we’re #gaminginthetimeofcovid19. It’s not bad! I mean, it’s obviously a co-op graft on a competitive game, and so it doesn’t have the feel of a true co-op, but Hero Realms is fun and the character decks and quest book make it pretty flavorful. I’ve played all the various Realms games, some of them a lot, but Hero Realms is the only one that has ended up really speaking to me. With the full range of expansions now (classes, boss decks, quests, campaigns) it’s a game which has a pretty decent amount of range at a reasonably low cost in time, space, or money. I do wish that the interface design was better though - text, numbers, etc., were made too small to make way for all the (admittedly usually pretty nice) art - even on the giant Boss cards. Anyway, not a top-tier game for me for sure, but fun and with nice range compared to its competitors in this space. Sorcerer. I’ve been off the Realms train for a while now - I just find Ascension and Shards of Infinity a lot better than any of the highly derivative games in the Realms family. But I was curious about Sorcerer, since it was from an outside designer and had an interesting mix of ideas (building decks out of character attributes Smash Up-style, dice for conflict resolution). I quite enjoyed it! The decks are really interestingly-designed, and the die rolling is balanced cleverly with re-roll chits you can earn and adds excitement and drama. The game seems to remain dynamic as events swing one way or the other, and isn’t just a grind as these things can often be. It’s possible to pull off late-game come-backs. The “dark sorcery in London” setting wasn’t quite as compelling as I thought it might be, and White Wizard is still addicted to their small font sizes and sometimes murky or overly baroque design style, but overall it well exceeded expectations and I was really happy with it.
