Here's a few progression shots of a lil' guy if y'all want to give it a try. He's roughly 2" tall by 1" wide, but you can make him any size you'd like 👍

Don't waste you're money buying a strop for honing your knives when you can make one in less than 20 mins from stuff around your house. Grab yourself an old leather belt, a flat length of wood, and some wood glue. As for the rest, just cut the wood to match the width and length of the belt (length is up to you) mine is roughly 8" long not including the handle (handle is optional as well as its not required but good if you want to hang it while not in use). Make sure to score the side of the wood accepting the leather with a knife, and lightly sandpaper the shiny side of the leather which will be glued to the scored surface of the wood, this so there is good adhesion between both surfaces. Then add the glue & line up the leather with the wood. You could also set a few heavy flat objects on top (I used blocks of wood) to ensure strong adhesion. Once glue has set you can cut any leather from the edges that may overhang, and if you added a handle take a file and add a smooth bevel to the edges for comfort.
That's it! Now step back & get ready to enjoy years of faithful service from an invaluable tool for a wood carver that you've created 💪 👍
Thanks for reading & happy whittling

Some of you may not know this but I'm studying to become a dental lab technician. Here is a quick peak at my bench, and a crown wax up I'm working. I suppose this could be considered another form of carving! I sure enjoy it!
Wood carving or whittling can be a very mobile hobby, depending on the size of the wood you plan to work on. I have a little kit that I've put together that I keep in my bag everyday. I've been carrying it for over a year, and when I go camping or find myself with time to spare while not at home I can reach for this kit and whittle the time away. Usually I only have 2 knives in the kit to keep it light, but lately I've added a set of 5 power grip gouges. I have found I use them in almost all my projects lately, and they are very fun to use. Inside the kit are a few other tools in addition to the knives such as a small strop, stropping compound (in the film canister), a pencil, a thumb guard, bandaids (hey you never know), and a small slip strop I made for the gouges. I also keep a piece of wood or the project I'm currently working on in the kit too. I like having the ability to practice when the mood strikes. #whittlewhereyouare
Hey there, If any of y'all are interested I was recently interviewed for a podcast called "One New Thing" @onenewthingpodcast The hosts Ryan & Derek are super chill guys and the idea behind the podcast is super fun, where they attempt to try and learn a new skill or hobby each episode. The lastest episode is about whittling! So if you want to hear my dumb voice talk about beginner basics then give it a lil listen 👂 I'm sure the guys would appreciate it! . Here's another slanty finial topped spoon 🥄 This one clocks in at 7.5" long. It's great for the last bit of peanut butter or jam in the bottom of the jar 🍯 .
