Who Made Google? Google was made in January 1996 as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were both PhD students at Stanford University in California. The two started an idea of a technology that reviewed the relationships between websites. They called this technology as PageRank (PR), wherein a website's importance was determined by the number of important pages that linked back to the original site.
Page and Brin originally named their new search engine "BackRub" since the system kept track of backlinks to analyze the relevance and importance of the site. Later, they modified the name to Google, from the word "googol" which means a number one followed by one hundred zeros. The choice of this word symbolizes the goal of the company to give huge quantities of information to people. It was on September 15, 1997, Google's domain name went live.
The initial funding for Google was a US$100,000 contribution from Andy Bechtolsheim in August 1998, the co-founder of Sun Microsystems. Google's first floatation took place on August 19, 2004. They offered 19,605,052 shares at $85 per share. The shares were offered through a unique online auction format. The sale of $1.67 billion generated a capital of more than $23 billion. However, majority of the 271 million shares remained under the control of Google and many of its employees.
