snippet saturday sunday
a bit more than a snippet, but here's some of the original fiction i've been tapping away at:
A few doors down from Davis’ bakery, the Whetherwear Girls are hard at work hawking their trends with the forceful, perky persistence drilled into them by Mrs. Hogan, a former beauty queen who runs her boutique with an iron first. The Whetherwear Girls are an elite force in Hollybrook; only the most popular girls are hired, and they are only allowed to wear Whetherwear merchandise. Everywhere. All the time. To school. To events. On dates. There was a rumor once that a girl had been fired when Mrs. Hogan showed up at her house unannounced at midnight and found her in pajamas her mom had bought at Bloomingdales.
The Girls are currently arranging a rainbow of colored tights and a display of chunky bangles, chirping brightly at anyone brave or stupid enough to wander nearby. When one of them, Candy Finedom, spots Jack, she and the other two Girls giggle and wiggle their fingers at Jack, doing that wave he thinks they all learned in sex ed when the boys and girls got split up for different talks, because he’s never seen a dude do it like that but it seems to come naturally to every girl he knows. He smiles and waves back, and wonders if the Girls are cold; Candy’s in a denim mini-skirt and teal tights exactly like the ones on the table, and one of the other Girls, Natalie Clarke, has an artfully cut-up Debbie Gibson tee and Levi’s, and she seems to be shaking like a chihuahua with a visitor at the door.
Well. Jack’s mom always says beauty is pain. Maybe beauty is freezing your ass off, too.
