Return of the Rollerskates courtesy of Who's Jack
So with the sunny weather making a glamorous arrival to change what seemed like a mundane summer, outdoor pursuits are a must to make the most out of our truly Great British weather. With Andy Murray’s win, the Tour De France hot on topic and the Ashes test series commencing, Britain’s on a high and needs to exert some of this positive energy before jetting off abroad for that all important summer holiday.
We might not have a beach at just a five minute walk or an hours drive away like California but why not make the most of this luxurious weather with a skate in the park or trip to the local shops. Bikes and skates are a healthy alternative to avoiding the sardine bus on the way to work. Whilst according to the Evening Standard some of us workers have been pulling sickies to soak up some rays you can now get the best of both worlds with this easy solution. Re-surfacing those skates is guaranteed to bring back child-like memories, encourage you to get chatting (on the odd bump into people) and get your day started with a stress-free giggle friendly commute. Battersea Park and Hyde park to name a couple are swarming with kids enjoying their summer break racing round the paths taking on the crowds. If they can do it so can we! Release your dreams of being the skater on Flo-Rida’s latest video and get a subtle tan hassle-free without being tempted to call in sick.
In popular culture rollerskating was seen with Olivia Newton-John in the movie Xanadu and later with Linda Blair in Roller Boogie as well as many more films in recent years. Like all things that come to evolve, the modern day skate has derived from two very unpractical wheels on shoes. Some may even say they resembled mini bikes. The customised skate has been around since 1743 and has had huge impacts as a leisure activity as well as a sport. Getting my grade two and performing a balance on one leg could easily scare me out of getting back on them but the big Roller discos and roller Derby’s are what made skating fun. Around the 1950′s disco and funk music went hand in hand with skating and created a unique kind of party. With the sun shining right now I can not imagine anything more thrilling that putting Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’ on full blast and taking my dusty wheels for a test drive.
Rollerskates are great for taking alternative routes just make sure you get in some practise before taking on the main street crowds. At the weekend grab some mates and head to a night club roller disco to show off you new found skills. Summer fun solved.
